Chester Zoo Chester Zoo's Asian Lion Enclosure

Our Zoo News, October 1946 says that the lion enclosure would hold 20-30 adults!!!!

I did a quick calculation by scaling an aerial photograph up, so area's may not be 100% but Chesters Lion enclosure came up at 2,000 square meters compared to the Cheetah's 2,800 square meters however the cheatah enclosure has 5 seperate paddocks which was included in calculations.

Has anybody saw Lion Hill at Auckland Zoo? I know that all building work is on hold whilst Natural Vision is being planned but think something similar would be good for Chesters Lions.

I like the lion enclosure really, as Pertinax says a few more plants might make it look a bit more exciting, but I think that'd be more for the benefit of the people than the animals. Beats others I have seen (Bristol, London, Twycross), not sure whether it's better than Edinburgh's.

I'm not quite as fond of the tiger enclosure, but come to think of it I always look at tiger enclosures and wish there was a bit more to them. There's far smaller tiger enclosures in other zoos, and the lush planting is nice- I do think it would be better in only viewed from one side. I think it's just that part of me thinks, that for a zoo with a reputation like Chester it'd be brilliant to see a 'world class' tiger exhibit with the whole immersive jungle feel. I'm sure it'll happen in time.

I also think something like kingdom of the lion at africa alive would be a good addition to chester

The lion enclosure is suitable for what the zoo wants to exhibit, its got good vantage points for the lions, is shady and wooded like their would be natural habitat, and there is plenty of hideaways for the lions.

The tiger exhibit is nicely planted for the sumatrans, but i think size wise, it will be a push to suitably house 1.1 and offspring

as I (and many others) have said in this thread, Chester's lion enclosure is perfectly fine for the time being. AA's also seems to be built into a natural hillside which would not be able to be achieved on Chester's quite flat terrain.

There is no room to build a new big cat enclosure on the current site without remodelling and it is more important for resources to be directed towards heart of africa and a number of other smaller projects before being directed towards exhibits which do not particularly require an upgrade at this time.

I think we waste our breath sometimes!
