Edinburgh Zoo Births in 2009

I hope the Buchara deer will breed up numbers and get over the bad start of yester year (see 2008 Annual Report). Any news about them? New import females perhaps (a definite need ...)?

The Buchara deer are now held at the Highland Wildlife Park. I have not been up there since October so unsure on numbers.

According to the HWP 2008 Animal Inventory , the Buchara deer had a disastrous year , they started off with 3.6 , 0.2 arrived , 3.2(2.1) were born , but 0.7 died , leaving just 4.2 .

This is just speculation , but I read that they have emptied the Main Reserve for ragwort clearance , wonder if stock was lost to poisoning ? There were also losses of 4.6 reindeer , 2.2 Buchara urial sheep and others during the year .

This is exactly the situation I was refering to. I find it important that European zoos try and conserve and breed up the numbers of the critically endangered Buchara deer (any red deer subspecies is easy to breed and increase numbers swiftly by captive-breeding ... it would register a real op for European zoos to move forward in situ conservation for the taxon in Central Asia (Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan).

Very bad news - appears not quite everything is rosy at the HWP park then. I wonder if they can increase the Bucharan deer herd again with only either one or two adult females.

Does anyone know ifthe pygmy hippo calf is on show yet?

Was out and about on Saturday morning. I think they are allowing it out a little each day as it gets used to its surroundings.

Was at zoo yesterday and saw it fast asleep next to mum inside house.

Me too, so many people just came into the house and said 'nothing there' even as I was looking over the fence to see them. It was actually great exploring the zoo in the mist and fog

yes the hippo was out on saturday morning but inside early afternoon, cannot believe the size of her!

i was there a few days after her mother Ellen was born 4 years ago so its brilliant we now have the next generation at the zoo!

Thats great... i am going up on the 9th of July for a sunset safari :) so hopefully get some pictures of her then :)

Is anyone else going? anyone going to the members night on the 17th?

Lesley, i notices a "Chinese Serow calf" in one of your pictures, was that a Japanese Serow or (i think...) a chinese Goral?

at the zoo yesterday, great news to report is the birth of at least 4 Chilean Flamingo chicks!!

seems that the moving of the nest site by the keepers this year has worked!

two rockhopper chicks are growing from strength to strength and the older gentoo chicks are now being held in the 'creche' beside the rockhoppers

at the zoo today and a 5th flamingo egg hatched this morning!

other baby news....brown capuchin (within Maurice's group in Living Links), lilac breasted roller chicks (within the African Aviary)

saving the best news for last.....a baby Anteater was born within the last few months to the zoo's new adult pairing...father is being held offshow just now allowing mother and baby some peace and quiet......you can see them in the house at the top of the enclosure which is closed off to the maned wolves during the day.....

also saw the whole maned wolf clan today, male & female and three unsexed pups.....keepers advised these will be sexed within the next few weeks.....if you get a chance to make it to the top of the hill, after 4.30 is the best time to see them all out and about.....any earlier and you will not see them

Great news GA, thanks for the update, are the new baboons settling into their new enclosure, i guess this will be again used for quarantine, and the baboons moved elsewhere in the park?
