Toronto Zoo Exhibits!!

It smells because of the decomposing matter in the water and the algae build up. Its mainly ammonia in the water. (Im a fish freak, its common in man-made ponds and in tanks :p)

I am going to make a thread for my Toronto Zoo visits and post my questions and comments from those days! Stay tuned for a new Toronto Zoo thread!

No, the temple has never been open to the public because it is actually the holding area for the animals in this region

I was just looking at a picture of a mara in the TZ photo gallery and I thought of something

Since the cutbacks deleted the musk ox enclosure for Tundra Trek. The old mara exhibit was never demolished (Or was it? I haven't been to the zoo since the weekend before Bisitek left for Cochrane), should'nt something replace the mara's?

Endless possibilities fill my head (tapir, anteater, capybara, bush dog, etc.) as to what could fill the enclosure?

Does anyone know what or if anything is due to be placed there?

The Mara exhibit is apart of the new reindeer exhibit. Which is extreamly large and looks amazing its about 3 times the size of the current reindeer exhibit. So for replacing something in the mara exhibit its not gonna happen. :p

Oh, that right

Now I remember from looking at older plans, the Musk Ox enclosure covered the Mayan Temple Ruins (Im actually kind of glad the got cutback, I would'nt want that area removed for Musk Ox

Yea, I guess I could agree with you there zoogoer, but its sad so see a remarkable Canadian species die out at the TZ.

As for the current snow leopard I would be thinking along the line of a small candian animal because that section of Eurasia will probably contain the Canadian animals as a part of the Canadian Wilderness!
You are thinking along the right lines. The Toronto Zoo will be moving the entire Canadian Domain up into that area north of Eurasia section, in and around the current snow leopard exhibit. However, I don't know if the exhibit will be kept or if the land will need to be cleared in that area for all of the Canadian animals. I was told all of this just last week by a very trusty source and the reason for this is because they don't want people to have to keep going up and down the Canadian Domain hill and also because it will fit in well with the Tundra Trek area.

It is sad, but they shouldn't send him anywhere or bring in more females for him because of what he did to the females that they wanted him to breed with.

@Tapir: the male muskox the zoo has cannot breed and there were only a few times he injured females. I think the zoo should send him out so he isn't alone after all they are herding animals.

@tiffanyanddave: Most of us here are very aware of the North Zoo Site Redevlopment Project, the main reason for the move of the Candian Domain is due to various vistor complaints about the hill. This was posted in a news article somewhere but I am unsure of which one. I will try and find it.

Hopefully the TZ gets started on the Eurasian Section of the zoo soon, I would love to see areas devided into Zoogoers thaughts, i.e. steppe, plains etc. and I would love to see a home for giant pandas! Even if the zoo only gets them for 10 years they can also put another bear in there after.

Really? My camp counsilors told me that he killed some of them (I'm not sure how many, but i think they said he at killed, like, one or two) as well as injured them.

The source that I was speaking with said that they are getting giant pandas in a few years for sure. However, he said that the majority of the keepers there would rather see the $10,000,000 or so be spent elsewhere then on the giant pandas as the rental fee to China for them.

Who is this "secret source?" Its debatable it could be spent somewhere else but thinking of it like this. Double the attendence of the zoo over a ten year time and they will make over 20 million revenue from having pandas in the long run they will make more. We don't know China and Canada have good ties and its possible that they may give us 2 or 4 pandas?

@tapir, the male did kill one female and injured a few others.

Ok, I was close (I'm not very good in math :p). I'm just not sure what possibilites there are for him. he does need to be with others, but no one wants that to happen again, so....And i beleive he's fairly old anyways, or getting near there.

If the zoo acquires pandas it will surely boost the attendance and revenue for the zoo which will allow the zoo to build and enhance exhibits and with the Canadian Wilderness, Tundra Trek, Eurassia phase and the Americas phase it will also help boost revenue and attendance, hopefully extending the pandas stay. I think they should use the money to get these pandas, with all these new projects being built.

I think I know who your talking about, I have talked to him before too! This is one reason why I the TZ is so popular, the staff who work there are extreamly friendly and most do take the time to answer your questions.

Anything else he tell you of interest?

Date for new exhibit opening please

My husband and I have been buying the yearly family membership for over 5 years but held off renewing this year until we knew the Polar Bear area renovations were complete. I'm sure it's been answered a dozen times here but when will it be ready for the general public?

Thanks a bunch,

K
