I thought it would be interesting, to give a sneak peak of the soon coming World of Ecology exhibits, at the Los Angeles California Science Center. I've been awaiting the completion of this expansion for several years.

The California Science Center is located in Exposition Park, directly across the street from the main campus of USC.

Being from L.A., I find this fascinating - I can't believe none of my relatives told me about it. Is the kelp forest aquarium already open?

No not yet, but I believe it will be in the next few months. This has been a part of their plans since Long Beach announced plans for the Aquarium of the Pacific. They're finally getting it done. The entire exhibit should be complete in the next year or two.

Look for expansions in the nearby Museum of Natural History as well. Many people don't realize that outside of Washington D.C.'s Smithsonian, Exposition Park has the largest concentration of museum complexes in the nation.

Wow, I really can't wait for the Rain forest part of the Forest Zone. Does the whole thing open in 2010? or is it in phases?

There has been much talk about the blending of zoos and theme parks, but I also find it interesting the blending of zoos and museums.

I believe in phases, but the entire thing should be completed shortly. I've been watching the construction of this huge expansion site going up for several years now.

Won't it be nice to see two new Rainforest exhibits opening in Los Angeles in the next couple of years Mario? California Science Center's and Rainforest of the America's at the L.A.Zoo.

Yes, and the cool thing is that the one in CSC will be an Southeast Asian Rain Forest and the zoo's will be a South American Rain forest.

Is this new expansion inside the CSC or in a new structure?

A bit off topic, but greater Los Angeles also has more museums than any other city in the world - approximately 300!

This is a whole new series of structures extending behind the original CSC building.

Not many details in these links. The second link shows two parts - kelp forest and asian rain forest. Am I correct in assuming only the kelp forest is opening March 25, or is it both parts?

Correct, only the Kelp Forest at this time, the Rain Forest opens a bit later. Maybe even next year if I remember correctly. That will be the second phase.

Here is an actual photo of the soon to open, 188,000 gallon Kelp Forest Aquarium. Apparently before the fish specimens were introduced.

Ecosystems: Kelp Forest

Reminds me of a similar display at the Monterey Bay Aquarium.

Looks pretty cool. I have to do a quick trip out to L.A. in a couple weeks to pick up something downtown, so I may stop by here for two or three hours (unless I decide to go to The Living Desert instead on my way out).

Check the website first, because even though it's free, at least for the first few days you have to schedule an appointment for the day and time you'd like to go. That may not be a necessity in a couple of weeks when you plan to come out, but I'm scheduled for 2:15 PM this coming Friday the 26TH. Being my off day, I'll probably drop by the zoo that morning at about 10, and then head down to the Science Center around 1:30. I'll definitely be taking pictures and will try to post them as soon as possible.
