Journey to the East

The Nocturnal Department as well as the small mammals and fish enclosure in the Taiga Restaurant are more or less sufficient, although pretty blank in style. Especially genet, burunduk and jerboa seem to be a little stressed by the current husbandry conditions.
what is a burunduk in English (or Latin if it doesn't have an English name)?

If not Sun Wukong, may be Toddy will write after his visit of Pilsen

I will go there later this week so let me se what I can do when I come home :)

Hey Sun, it's me! Just want you to know that I really, REALLY enjoyed these reviews! See, THIS is why I assumed that you are from the Czech Republic.

I'm surprised about the positive feedback-even from the most unlikely sources. Currently, I have plenty of work to do, but if I find the time (maybe next week?), I will write a review of both Pilsen and Prague. Otherwise, I don't mind Toddy posting one, and I might add a word or two. Everyone OK with that?

Anxious to hear about Prague, one of my favorite zoos based on a visit a few years ago. Gharials!

Gharials - that reminds me recent news that second specimen dared to visit outside exhibit (and spend whole weekend there). Surprising how shy/suspicious/lazy/conservative those animals are, five of them still didn't left inside space at all.

From over here in "the States", I'm a bit surprised at how excited you are about seeing gharials. They certainly ARE a marvelous animal to see, one of my favorite reptiles. But from your excitement, I'm guessing that they are much more rare over in Europe than they are in USA zoos. I can count at least 7 American zoos with gharials, plus another 4 or so with "false gharials". So this must be another of those differences between European and American zoos.

Bronx Zoo's gharial display used to be my favorite thing there--now they have none. San Diego's is okay, but no underwater viewing. Ft. Worth has potential, but it's not open yet. Busch Gardens keeps them in an amusement park setting (you know how I love that!) Who else has them?

The photos of Prague's exhibit look very exciting.

But Prague maybe the ONLY zoo in Europe to display them?

Cleveland has them in a very decent exhibit inside the rain forest building. Underwater viewing too. Maybe the only downside is that it is indoors.

BTW, a quick check of ISIS confirms that Prague is the only European Zoo to have them.

I hope to do my own "Journey to the East" soon, to visit the best zoos of the Czech Republic (and other nearby nations). But the question is, which zoos should I go out of my way to see? So I ask you zoo fans from the Czech Republic (and others who know them) -- what ARE the best zoos of the Czech Republic?

I've obviously heard that Prague is far and away the nation's best, and it's the only one I've seen already. So is this true, is Prague the best? What is the 2nd-best, 3rd-best, and others? What about Dvore Kralove, Chomutov, and Zlin-Lesna? Would these be the next best Czech zoos, and in what order? What other Czech zoos am I not mentioning?

So to help me, it would be great if some of you could list your 5 favorite zoos, in order, in the Czech Republic. If enough of you do so, I'll accumulate your picks statistically and post the results of this informal poll. (I'm a professional statistician.) Thanks!

@ANyhuis
As you have mentioned above (and I absolutely agree with you ) Prague Zoo is the best in my country, with fantastic collection of animals (Checkered Elephant Shrew, Ratel, Chinese ferret-badger, 2 species of Cloud Rats, Gharials,Shoebills etc), my second favourite zoo is Pilsen, because of a big variety of small mammals that cann be seen in Madagascar Pavillion and Night of Africa House, which is divided into day a night section. Last year they finished new African and Asian areas, both are really worth seeing.
Lesna is situated near the Slovak border and is a bit out of hand but located in the beautiful environment, the whole area is divided into zoogeographical sections, most animals are kept in large and natural enclosures, the animal's collection is not so big but you will be intrigued with this beautiful park, especially the new-built area called Etiopie will catch your eyes and Yucatan tropical hall attracts attention of many visitors too.
Dvur Kralove was my prior Number 1., but this zoo has lost its former fame and charm, it has became too much commercial. Dvur still has the largest variety of african ungulates in Europe, but the collection was much better in 70-80-ies, with 6 species of hartebeests, bushbocks, gerenuks...but it was not possible to import new animals or get new blood from other european collection because of rarity of many species, so they have gradually died out. But still one of the best Czech's zoos, can be far more ahead with right person on director's position...
Regarding at my opinion, these are the best Czech zoos and I am pretty sure, you will be satisfied with these collections
