Chester Zoo Orangutan update - 12/07/09

Someone I know got some very good photos of Tuan on his outdoor frame recently, but said it was very difficult to get them.

We will just have to keep trying and hoping then and look at different ways to see into the area - standing on picnic table opposite may be an option for us little shorties!! :) Thanks for the info ... will persevere and succeed .... eventually!

Pulau Tiga is a island in borneo (meaning Island of Three) so i guess Tiga means 3

Rajy had the far end sleeping quarters and outside, Tiga had inside and end sleeping compartment.

Rajy was just staring at the bars and wall till I got him to come over for a kiss then he went back to staring.
Tiga was under curtain and trying to be brave and go get some food but kept diving back under when noisy people came along. He did come out a bit so got some photos of him and lots of eye contact :D

It does look very good I will hint to fella like mad that we should go :D

Sorry folks for going off the thread of Chester ... just realised we've moved to Colchester!

Ahh, there is still a link to a Bornean/Sumatran place then - it just makes me think of cats rather than an orang! Sounds as though he is getting a bit braver then, peering out more!

Poor old Ragy, confined in the sleeping area and outside - no wonder he was sulking - he likes the full window. They must be rotating them around. He was probably staring at the bars wondering what the hell was going on with this intruder in his pad!! Did you see any sign of his 'replanted' handywork outside??? Me thinks it will have died going by the lack of depth planted!! :D

I'm doing the Shadow Keeper on 7th Aug so I hope things have settled by then as I want to see plenty of Ragy!

Get yourself booked ... it's a one off chance!! The Primate Eve was very enjoyable, far better than we had expected so this one should be even better.

Being quite short myself, I often have to use the "peer through bamboo" technique which you described.

I've only seen one Orang on the island since RORA opened and that was Sibu and when I saw him, he was on one of the platforms and I was watching him from closer to the chimp island than the Orang one (if that makes sense). If he is on the climbing frame, you're probably better watching him from a distance than being up close.

However, it has been said on here that Tuan did not have an outdoor enclosure at Antwerp, so psychologically he may feel more secure inside...

Thanks for that - it makes perfect sense - view from afar rather than nose pressed into a gap inbetween the bamboo - not a chance of getting the camera into situ!! :D As you say, I've heard the same re no outside enclosure so it could be a long wait with a lot of trips ... I'll persevere on though as the mature males are my favourite.

That photo is in the gallery. I almost had to climb up the railings round the chimps to get it :) Interestingly, my correspondent on Flickr, who saw Tuan at Antwerp, says that his coat has grown a good deal since he's been at Chester.

No it wasn't your photo, it was someone else(not a Zochatter) since. They also had to stand precariously on something to get them. Not quite a good as yours but almost. ;) What is that stockade surrounding the old island actually for?
