The YWP has just taken delivery of its newest attraction, Red River Hogs!

They have been placed near the Lemure enclosure, which is also close by the new Birds of Pray exhibit, which has been provided for Icarus Falconary displays, who will displaying twice daily during the summer holidays.

The YWP has a new revamped home page, making it easier to navigate our website and find all of our latest info and read our park blog!

Can you tell us were the RRHogs came from?

I can they came from edinburgh, and we have 1 male and 1 female.

The hope is that they will breed and add to The YWP's fantastic birth rate and help us to conserve this animal for future generations to admire.

I also mentioned above about a new look website.

Our web address has stayed the same and the majority of the pages are the same, however the home page will look different to people who visit the site regularly and some of the photos throughout the site have changed too.

Having said this the site now feels easier to use and much more user friendly. See for yourself!!!

I like the new look Site :)

I see they are offering free return visit to park! Thats good value what with the school hols hope this draws people in!

We were going to go to on of the free Saturday nights in july they were doing when I was up that way but got stuck in traffic on the way back from Chester zoo :(

I will visit next time I am up that way :D

Well I hope in that case they are not litter mates that have been together since birth. If they are its quite likely they will not breed- some other zoos have experienced this.

The pair from Edinburgh Zoo are not related - we still have the brother of your new female at Edinburgh with an unrelated female

That's good. Just out of interest can you explain where the various individual RRHogs at Edinburgh were bred/sourced?

Does anyone know where YWP intend to get their lions from?
I know their are young lions in Blackpool,Blair Drummoned and Knowsley and Africa Alive - Although i think they are being kept as they know have a good strong group.Longleat have young lions although i think they are keeping them as they are on hold for breeding at the moment.
Any news would be great :)

Edinburgh have had red river hogs since late 2004 and not had breeding success yet

we have had various males & females being swapped around with other zoos so I am not sure where they all came from

That is very interesting news I wasn't aware of. A lot of zoos seem to be breeding them quite freely. For some reason Edinburgh haven't had a compatable/breeding pair yet. Port Lympne's original pair never bred, nor did Belfast's (both were brother/sister type pairings that came from Duisburg).

they had a male that was a bit of a bully to the female - he was moved down to Knowsley Safari Park and they received a young brother/sister but not sure where from

the sister is still at Edinburgh and the brother is the one who had arrived at YWP with an unrelated female

That makes good sense. With a bit of luck :) both these pairs may breed in the future. The brother/sister pair probably wouldn't have, same as the other places I mentioned.

The only lions they would get from Knowsley would be males. 11/12 of the cubs born over the last 18 months where male. 5 where castrated, and the rest are in tact. I think breeding has been stopped there for the time being.
