South Lakes Wild Animal Park South lakes news

I last visited South Lakes last August, & when i was there they had a new Lioness in quarantine. Does anyone know if they managed to intigrate her into the pride succesfully? I have rarely heard of zoo's succesfully intigrating females into a pride with females already present... Does anyone know of any zoo's that have managed to do this?

I believe they have but i know no more than that.
 
I visited South Lakes today and have very mixed views on the place. The mixed exhibit ideas I thought had some great pros, social enrichment, education etc. I know most seem to dislike the S American exhibit, this is very similar to the one at Jersey Zoo and few would dispute their competence! They don't have the tapir or cappys though If I remember correctly.

The walk through exhibits are somewhat risky tho, loose emu.. they can be unpredictable and dangerous, especially to kids at a good kicking hight. Having the red, black & white / belted lemurs together seems risky also, in fact Im sure I saw at least one possible hybrid, not to mention the risks with human contact. I know such exhibits are now common place but they at least should be supervised unlike South Lakes.

All that said they have some impressive enclosures (macaw aviary) and naturalistic stimulating environments have clearly been made a priority, for its size the collection surpassed my expectations.
 
Jersey only has otters and coatis (I think) with their bears, makes more sense and is fine IMO as they can actually escape from the bears, whilst the tapirs and capybara can't.
 
Fair point, I didnt see any sign of conflict, the cappys were practically in the pool at the same time as one bear and it appeared they took no notice of each other, I actually couldnt see the tapir, not a great tapir enclosure though it has to be said.

I think they might have howler monkeys as well :)
 
According to their new leaflet NEW FOR 2010 will be:

Giant Otters (already arrived...well one has)
Southern Tamanduas (already arrived)
Jaguars
Black Howler Monkeys
Sloths
Prairie Dogs/ Marmots

Any ideas where these will all go because i'm pretty sure space is very tight there now. I think the Giant Otters are going where the Mandrills and Pygmy Hippos used to be.
Could the prairie marmots be the ones that used to be in Chesters 'Marmot Mania'??
 
Please don't tell me theTamanduas and Sloths are going in this South American exhibit as well.
Knowing South Lakes, the Jaguars probably are :eek:
 
The Jaguars will probably have one of the Tiger enclosures and as a result South Lakes will only exhibit 1 species of Tiger.As for the rest of the species they will probably be in a mixed exhibit,but may be not all together.
 
i assume the tigers to go would be the Amur's due to the park making a big thing about their sumatran tiger project. Could it be that Egor and Nina have both died as they were pretty old cats.
 
Have they swapped either of the Sumatran pair yet? They hadn't bred because they thought they were siblings due to being introduced at such a young age.

Egor had already died when I visited in September last year, but Nina was still going strong. She may have died since then, of course.
 
A young male West African Giraffe (sub-species peralta ) , named Dayo , arrived at South Lakes last month . He is the only representative of the sub-species in the UK .

On Sunday, Tupi the giant otter seemed quite relaxed in her new pool and was also keenly investigating her enclosure and standing upright to get a look at the spider monkeys next door. Yes, the enclosure is where the mandrills and pygmy hippos used to be.

I found out from a keeper that unfortunately the southern tamanduas died quite soon after their arrival :(

No sign of any jaguars yet. Both tiger enclosures are currently occupied and there really isn't anywhere else they could be housed.

The black howler monkeys are housed between the siamang gibbons and the white-handed gibbons.

The two-toed sloths are currently in an indoor area next to the spider monkeys, opposite the howler monkeys and white-handed gibbons. A notice stated "The sloths are in quarantine and this is their temporary home". I have no idea where they intend to permanently house them after they have served their quarantine term.

The prairie dogs are free-roaming in the lemur / kangaroo / wallaby walk-through. They were popping up everywhere on the grass at the top of the hill. I don't know if they came from Chester Zoo.

The cotton-top tamarins are now free-roaming as well.

Also, they now have Humboldt penguins instead of black-footed penguins.
 
Does anyone know when they recieved the Fennex foxes?

Also I had vowed not to go back to this collection, but its tempting me again now.
