Newquay Zoo Questions and Answers for Newquay

this thread is to ask and answer questions concenring newquay zoo (the other newquay zoo thread here the african plains and phillipine exhibit, wouldn't be suitable)

My questions is that recently they have acquired squirrel monkeys, on the twitter account they say they are by the diana monkeys and the capuchin monkeys suggesting they are in the cherry capped mangabey cage. does this mean mangabey have left the colection? I would imagine the marmoset/tamarin islands would provide more suitable exhibit than the large cage between two large monkey exhibits.

Please feel free to ask other questions.

I have just visited Newquay Zoo and saw the squirrel monkeys in the cage between the Diana monkeys and the capuchins (was this the mangabey cage?) I have heard that the mangabeys moved to Paignton Zoo.

I went last week for the first time. The tamandua has moved to Switzerland, the mouse deer was nowhere to be seen, and the path past the Owston's civets was closed, so I go 0/3 of the animals I really wanted to see:(

I can't say I was too impressed with the "African Savannah". It makes me want to rename our tank of stick insects "The Indian Jungle".

I emailed the zoo a while back saying the mangabey's have moved to paignton ut was unsure if i was able to share this information (there was a privacy statement on th bottom of the email).

Why did you not like the new african savannah i thought it was a large nice exhibit with great views for the visitors and the long grass gives a real savannha feel. It's great for the animals with a variety of species (from guinea fowl to zebra) and a variety of habitat (swampy area for the lechwe/waterbuck and hard ground area) :D

I thought the savannah was ok, but what gets on my nerves is how many zoos give their exhibits much grander names than they deserve. The Newquay enclosure is quite big but is basically just a fenced-in playing field with some houses in the background. The total population of a few zebras, lechwe etc was sparse, ie not Serengeti. When I visited the nyala and the gnu were locked in the hardstanding and not mixed with the rest of the animals.

Overall I thought NZ wasn't too bad, but it felt a bit like an expanded pet's corner to me.

Except for during the migration, I would think "sparse" an excellent way of describing the Serengeti!

I would agree, the african savannha is not hugely packe the enitre time. The nyala also have now been mixed with the zebra lechwe and a really big group of guinea fowl, ostrich have arrived but I dont think have been mixed, waterbuck and warthogs are also planned for the exhibit.

Its always had that feel. Newquay's problem has always been that they are just a very small zoo, though with an increasingly interesting collection.

As an avid zoo visitor ive found myself really enjoying smaller collections and newquay is very high on my list although I wouldn't say it was that small! its collection is increasingly diverse with some really cool species, which brings me to my question, whats wrong with small zoos? granted space is limited and you cant fill it with all the ABCs but often these smaller collections have more interesting exhibits!

Another question: are warthogs still planned to be part of the african exhibit? as they say waterbuck are coming (does anyone know where from?) but do not mention warthog!

- and if they are still planned, from what collection will they be coming from?

In another thread, narrow striped mongoose were said to be at Newquay. This is also supported by zootierliste who also list narrow striped mongoose at newquay.

there has been no news on their website, so does anyone know anymore or was this just a mistake???

Its not a mistake the species is still off-show,not sure when they will go on show yet.

do you know if it's going to be a breeding pair or just the one? and do you have any idea where they're going to go? the only place I can think of (without buildling a new enclosure) would be the current meerkat enclosure, though im not sure how well they would mix (though yellow mongoose and meerkats seem to work) and I can't see the zoo getting rid of their meerkats.

ps thank you :)

The narrow striped mongoose are a pair and will go in a redeveloped enclosure in the zoo, which has meant one species has left/or will leave the zoo! I cant wait to back to see them out as there will be something very special about their new enclosure that will make it very exciting! :) Sorry i cant say anymore!

Now I am desperate to know!

let's think of the possibles: the priare dogs are hardly noticed by visitors, but their enclosure might be a bit small for the mongoose. possibly the azaras agouti close to it, the zoo has an abudance of agouti's so im sure these woudln't be missed. the red panda enclosure (which links with the agouti and the priare dogs) has the possibility of glass bubbles in the enclosures as there is already a tunnel which is due for redevelopment. but im sure the zoo do not want to get ride of the red pandas.

the fossas could move or a new enclosure built for them somewhere else in the zoo, as it was reported the fossa enclosures where being done up.

and the old raccoon/current meerkat enclosure could be split in two seeing as it is big enough for both species

If i had my way (warning: momentary fanatasy :D) i would combine the priare dog and azras agouti enclosure for the mongoose

I suppose i will just have to wait. :(

all suggestions above are just my guesses :)

How about the old Coati enclosure when i went about a month or so ago the enclosure was empty and they were working in that area.

I went recently and noticed that too - anyone know what happened to the Coatis? They were amongst my faves at Newquay :(
