does anyone know the name of any calfs at the zoo or who have left. who there parents are. when they were born and where they are now. i would be greatful for any information.

Hate to be a kill joy but are you slowly working your way through every collection know to man wanting to know about all the major A to Z species kept within them,on a positive note try reading some of the other Chester threads and your question on this subject will be answered.

Just speaking generally, I often think it's a pity that some zoo websites (and in-situ info boards) don't give more biographical information, especially on the more charismatic species. People naturally like to have a name and a backstory to tie to individual animals.

Read the thread 'family trees' on the general forum, which started as a discussion on one of the Uk threads(I can't remember which but probably a Chester one.)

I think its been discussed here before that many zoos have tended recently to omit biographical info from their websites, in favour of more 'bland' information about the habits of the animal species in general. Which is a pity as you say.

Kelly gave birth to a healthy calf on Tuesday. Pure females are expected early next year.

Quite a few collections are now housing non-breeding groups of giraffe - males at South Lakes , Colchester , Knowsley , Folly Farm ; females at Blackpool , London , ( Africa Alive ? ). More holders will be needed though , as Chester and Belfast want to move out their hybrids and some , such as Banham , are still breeding hybrid giraffes .

I don't think it will Colchester - haven't they got three males (two hybrid, one Roth) ?

It'd be nice if Dartmoor got some - giraffes being big crowd pullers, tthe zoo would more get money and even more improvements could be done, but I'll have to dream about that since I don't see such happening anytime soon
