Bear breeding in the Uk

Thanks in advance :)

then it must have been a few years ago.. cause i distinctly remember a bear cub falling off a log an splashing into the water .... i think...lol

Our male sun bear was saved as a cub where he was chained to a tree and beaten. For a while he showed signs of distress from his past and our female was alittle chubby its true. They do however at times attempt to mate apparently but never go through the full motions! We could indeed try and replace either of the bears to and mix things up abit but we are happy to keep them together the way they are as again the demand is realatively low.:)

To the best of my knowledge they have NEVER breed Bears at Blair Drummond, the last 2 were a very good age for Brown Bears when they died, and as far as i know they were to old to breed when they arrived at B.D.

Thannks for the explanation. That seems the situation with nearly all the Bear species nowadays.

Visited the safari park today, there are no longer any European brown bears at the park, and the enclosure is empty, with no sign of any replacement species, for what is a fairly good enclosure.

Wellington Zoo in NZ breeds them at intervals too. Seems there is some luck(or knack?) involved in establishing a good breeding pair with Sun Bears.

I may be wrong, but I think that Wellington only squeezed out one successful breeding (two males) of their resident pair before the female died unexpectedly.

Although I haven't seen their exhibit, I understand from talking with the senior keeper at the time, that the important part is the privacy given to the female. The birthing den was away from the male, visitors and even the keepers had limited access/vision. The setup was certainly nothing amazing as the exhibit's renovations (completed circa 90s) didn't extend offshow (so think classic pre 80s concrete, windowless dens).

Perth has also bred sun bears, last year.

I think the problem of breeding bears in this country, apart from holding spaces, would be limiting visitor viewing into dens. See Noah's Ark Zoo farm thread as to the possibilities...

So does anyone know what off-exhibit facilities are in place for future breeding at RSCC, or is the current enclosure there a temporary exhibit for the still young animals?

No one knows, I asked someone if they were expanding and he said he couldn't say. Watch this space I guess.
