ZSL Whipsnade Zoo review 08/08/09

all i know is that i was told it was the female who shook her head alot that was moved. sorry i cant shed more light on it.
 
That was Azizah I think. Strange, thought we'd have heard of an elephant being moved.
 
How many femals did you see? I don`t think one has been moved, maybe one was in the house or with Emmet and you just didn`t see her.

Nope.:( And still no news of any big increases to the group which was supposed to happen after they built the new quarters. The AsianEle website shows no changes either- still holding 1.2.

Unless there has been a recent addition from Whipsnade?
 
I think that is one less, as I'm pretty sure there were 2 in the paddock, 2 in the holding pen and 2 in the elephant show. This may be wrong but I'm sure that's how it worked.
 
Five sounds good to me. The cows are Azizah, Lucha, Mya, Kaylee and of course Karishma. Ashley, perhaps you are thinking of Emmet as a 6th?
 
Maybe there was only one in the holding pen during the demo? They also use calves in the show which may have thrown me. But Azizah was the one who weaved, and they said she's moved on... Odd.

The back area is used for isolation and treatment. Unfortunately Liz had just died so she had probably been treated prior to this, I believe she was 25. The two you would have seen were Salt and Dominic, yesterday there were signs up apologising for the reduced sealion demonstration. Be interesting to see if new blood is brought in or if the original dolphinarium is overhauled. The female elephants were seperated into 2 and 3 grouping yesterday, euan with one, the un-named female with the other.

all the females were kept together before the new baby was born, the keeper said they are keeping them separate because euan is a bit too boisterous with the baby so they only have them together when the keepers are nearby.

Kaz - you may be thinking of Geeta (aka Dilberta) the third London elephant that moved to Whipsnade. She was euthanised in 2006 after showing severe arthritic symptoms and rumoured to be aggresive to keepers. I think its Aziza that doesnt get on with either kaylee or lucha.

well if it is we know it can't be demolished, its listed
 
Would be cool if they refurbed it a bit, it is showing it's age. Pretty cool building though.

I'm assuming that this is an opinion, not fact? Even though Dom can't be used for breeding just yet, I would guess that they will be after a couple of unrelated females for the future and continue with their breeding program. I just can't see Whipsnade keeping a batchelor group, the area is too small for there not to be issues between males, which is why all male offspring of berkeley were moved on to other collections. This is totally my personal opinion!!!
