Indian Leopard/Persian Leopard

Does anyone know if the Indian Leopard still exists and if so where is it exhibited?

Likewise, the Persian Leopard is very rare and is hardly seen in zoos. The Cleveland Zoo has one but i have not seen any others.

Are any other species of Leopard endangered besides the Amur Leopard? I hear so much about how there is less than 50 in the wild yet it seems like most zoos have a number of these species.

The SSP has conciously decided on the Amur Leopard coop breeding programme only. Hence, all other subspecies have been phased out, including Persian Leopard (that used to exist in relatively good numbers in the US).

The Persian Leopard is part of the European EEP coop breeding programme and the programme is well on track. The Indian Leopard is only restricted in good numbers in .... surprise ... Indian zoos only. Outside of India very few Indian Leopards are maintained.

Re your query on wild numbers: there are 28-35 Amur Leopard. The EEP is actually proposing releasing some captive-bred Amur Leopards back to the wild to re-inforce the wild population.

I remember a persian leopard being at Melbourne, though I haven't gone to the big cat section in a long time, and it may have passed on.

I remember Persian Leopards at Lowry Park in the early 90s (I haven't been to Florida since 1992, I think the date was), and I believe, at London (I went there in 1999). At least I think it was London, or I'm just thinking of Lowry.

Wuppertal Zoo (Germany) currently has a pair of Indian Leopards (I believe the only ones in Europe).

Persian Leopards have become increasingly unusual in British zoos recently as emphasis shifts to the Amur subspecies, but are still around in reasonable numbers on the continent.

In the UK most collection have amur leopards, one or two have hyrbid leopards (or they are likely to be hybrids eg Drayton manor), Chessington have persian leoaprds, banham have Sri-lankan leopards, North chinese leopards can be found in a few collections and one or two cliam to have african leopards. Looking at it the Uk actually has quite a good range of leopard subspecies.

thanks for the info..... what is the estimated population of wild Indian Leopards or Persian Leopards? I can't imagine their population being much higher than those of the Amur Leopard. What factors did these organizations utilize to decide which species to pay more attention to than others?

Is the Indian Leopard more closely related to its African cousin or to the Persian, Amur or other species of Leopard?

I would presume the sri lankan and Indian leopard are closely related.

The Feline Conservation Center has one Persian leopard and quite a few northern chinese leopards. They used to have two Persians but one escaped and was shot.

According to a very quick google search:

Indian leopard wild populations is/was thirteen thousand to fifteen thousand animals.

Persian leopard (in 2005) wild populations are 1,300

I dont know how accurate or up to date these sources are

I never heard about one escaping. I know they have had one male from San Diego for a while, but I never knew there was a second.

The arabian leopard (P.p. nimr) is also endangered, but there is a breeding program in place in the Middle East.

San Diego has North Chinese leopards, Maryland Zoo has two African leopards, and Lincoln Park has an Iranian leopard.

Very interesting....where did you find this information on google?.....Are there any Indian Leopards in the US?

I remember watching a documentary about pet big cats in America and an escaped persian leopard was shot!
