I live in the UK and find it so difficult in finding out the best way to get a career with giant pandas. I have a degree and i have had some work expereince with pandas and i am looking to work with them as soon as possible but being in a country where there are no pandas makes it hard to find the right contacts that can help me and give me advice. I cant apply for jobs in USA because you have to already be living there for a certain amount of time. Can anyone help?!!

erhm, i would say find a collection in another country and start working their and move through the sections, u will have to w8 ages til the UK get gaint pandas, i dont think we will see them in the next 90-100 years unless someone has lots of spare money ^^

it is hard, i mean ive contacted mexico zoo, australia zoo should be gettin them soon. Hopefully edinburgh zoo will be getting them next year. I know i need to get more work expereince with them before i can get a job but alot of zoos dont take volunteers and if they do you still have to be at college or you have to live in the country so options are limited!

1. Edinburgh probably wont get giant pandas by the way its going
2. its easier to go to places looking for a job in an easy section e.g big cats or something and wait for the section with giant pandas to have a opening.
3. its a probelm that the UK doesn't have Giant Pandas :S

did it imply? sorry for that! i meant nothing is going on no news nothing!

oh right

i don't mean to sound rude, but you shouldn't really be saying Edinburgh are 100 years away from getting pandas just because the zoo hasn't issued a press release for every minor stage in negotiations...

The general public doesn't need updating for every small step in the process, so the zoo doesn't need to release any info. When something major happens then i'm sure people will be told. I don't think the zoo wants to proclaim the definate arrival of pandas because they could be left with egg on their face (ala Oakland and LA with the monkeys)

It is actually Adelaide zoo, that will be getting pandas in the next few months.

Senior management at Edinburgh zoo are still actively pursuing the panda situation, and with the new home deal almost finalised, the project is far from dead.

Don't forget Vienna is in the EU so you have freedom of movement there. Could be a possibility maybe? And does Madrid still have them? Same case there as Spain is in the EU.

yeah sorry i meant Adelaide zoo. Edinburgh zoo just said to keep looking on their site for info when it comes.

I have tried Madrid zoo, Vienna, not getting much help.

maybe in the meantime you could look at working with other specie of bear somewhere in the uk at least that way you get more experience with similar animals.

yeah ive just found somethin which is a 3 month internship at a safari place in america where u work with bears and lions. its a step! just need money and lots of it!! :(

I emailed the main office email that is on the Vienna zoo website but i did not get a reply

Is this really surprising - email a zoo's main office asking for a job with the pandas and you are unlikely to be taken seriously. You need to get experience working at other zoos (and lots of it) before you should even be attempting this.

i didnt email Vienna zoo asking for a job, i just asked their general advice and whether they would take volunteers from the UK because some zoos dont take international volunteers. I know that i wont get a job straightaway without some more work expereince.

AFAIK, you can do a one month volunteering during summer at Zoo Vienna; closing date for applications is in April. You can’t choose where to do volunteering, you will be assigned to any department, and basic German language skills at least on A2-level are necessary. There are lots of applications every year, so biology, zoology and vet students are preferred.

Giant panda cub Fu Long is scheduled to leave this year, therefore there won’t be any demand for new giant panda keepers at Vienna in the near future.
