Zoos between Sydney and Adelaide

Over Christmas we will be driving back to Adelaide to spend time with family. I'm starting to plan our route and was thinking it would be nice to see some zoos or animal parks I haven't seen before (or in a while).

I will probably stop in at Western Plains Zoo in Dubbo on one of the legs - been over 5 years since our last stop there. Not exactly on the way, but that's okay - we're taking our time.

Anyone have other suggestions for places to stop along the way ? Haven't set our route yet, so hoping if there's something worth seeing that will help me decide which way to go.

Naturally while we are in Adelaide we will be visiting Adelaide and Monarto zoos - possibly several times (my wife is a lifetime member of Adelaide zoo so we get into both of them for free).

Isn't the Bredl family park in Renmark?

I can only assume it is still there - Bredls Wonder World Of Wildlife Satellite Map » ZooChat ... I visited this place about 14 years ago and from reviews I've read on the web it doesn't sound like it has improved at all.

If I'm passing through Renmark (which is a possibility), I'll try and stop there. According to some info I've seen on the web, they supposedly have a large reptile collection.

I was going to suggest The National Zoo but seeing as you're already going to Dubbo it's probably too much of a backtrack. but if you're going to Wagga Wagga you could also try and get to Albury to see OZ.E wildlife although I've never been and don't know what it's like. :)

We'd only go via Dubbo one direction, so there wouldn't be a problem going via Canberra the other way. Haven't been to the National Zoo in over 6 years, so that's worth considering.

The place is improving steadily since Rob has taken over.

If you have the time while in Adelaide, I strongly recommend you visit Kangaroo Island for two or three days (or longer).

We visited Kangaroo Island about 4 years ago - would love to go back and spend some more time there. Don't think we'll have time this trip though ... and I probably wouldn't go during the summer holidays anyway.

It's not actually a zoo, but I recall a tour company with a boat in Adelaide that will take you out into the Gulf and you can swim with wild dolphins.

If you're into that kind of thing.

Also Warrawong Wildlife Sanctuary is a good place to go if you are in the area and if you end up heading to Victor Harbor go to Urimbirra Wildlife Sanctuary.

Yup, those are both places I'm aware of - not too far from my wife's parents place.

At this point it looks like we'll be going: Sydney - Bathurst/Orange - Dubbo - Broken Hill - Jamestown/Clare - Adelaide/Mt Barker/Murray Bridge

... and then on the way back, Adelaide/Mt Barker/Murray Bridge - Renmark - Mildura - Deniliquin - Griffith - Wagga Wagga - Canberra - Batemans Bay/Mogo - Sydney

So any other suggestions for places to visit west of Sydney and east of Murray Bridge?
