ZSL Whipsnade Zoo Getting to Whipsnade via public transport

Is it easy to get to Whipsnade via public transport? I've had a look at the instructions on the website, I'm ok to get to Luton, has anyone used the bus from there? Is it reliable? I've never been there before so want to be sure of everything in advance.

Thank you!

I've been by bus from Luton but it was a long time ago. I did it for around three years and the service was reliable.

On my last visit I travelled from Stoke to Berkhamsted by train and from there to Whipsnade by taxi (£7 each way)

Thanks for the info. I've been told the bus is about £4.50 and stops right at the zoo so I'll give it a go. I'm planning to go next week.

I'm too, planning a trip to Whipsnade via public transport. I visited London Zoo a few days ago, but have never been here.

I would be getting the train from Portsmouth, but from there, I don't know what to do. But then, I've not even started thinking about it yet. I may steal some advice you're given, if that's alright? :D

The Portsmouth to London Victoria Southern service calls at Three Bridges and Gatwick Airport where you can change into First Capital Connect trains for Luton.

This will save you the hassle of crossing London by tube/bus/foot etc.

Recently, when travelling to Whipsnade by public transport, I have found it easier to catch a bus from Hemel Hempstead instead of Luton; it’s a much nicer journey too.

Hey Shiro,
Good topic. I also get around only via public transport, and put off going to Whipsnade because of that. Sounds like another zoo to add to my october travels :)

I went today, the bus times from Luton weren't very convenient in the morning so I took a taxi which was quite expensive, £17 but for the convenience I guess it was worth it and by getting an off-peak train it was about £7 extra in the end which isn't too bad and I managed not to spend any money other than getting a guidebook for my collection.

I got the bus from Whipsnade to Luton (1 hour, £2.90) at the end of the day but it was a bit confusing to read the timetables at the two bus stops outside but I got home in the end safe and sound.

It was a great day despite the disappointing weather - the forecast said it would be sunnier - I'll write a review in a separate thread.

I also used the bus service from Hemel Hempstead earlier in the summer. I believe there's a combined bus and zoo entry ticket you can buy, but I couldn't find out any information.

I ended up catching the last bus of the day back to Hemel Hempstead (which is not as late as you might think, so don't stay at the zoo till closing time!) It turned up 20 minutes late - I was on the point of phoning a taxi.
