Please note I said the Chimp enclosure was fine.

Not really. They are concerned the electrified fence is not strong enough to contain adult Male chimpanzees, so they keep only a group of females, which is socially very unnatural for them. I cannot understand why the Zoo cannot(or does not) rectify this problem which has been present for many years now. It is not a normal practise for a forward -thinking Zoo to keep chimps like this.

Taun what Imeant was that the big zoos nowadays have to get the visitors in to keep thier collections going and that most of the funding raised through the visitors actually goes straight back into the zoo collection.
Dawn on your point I was not having ago at you or anyone else I was just trying to point out that there are others ways of putting things across without making it sound to bad.
Karen I will be out of the country from the 28th for four weeks on a field trip but when I come back I will gladly help anyone out with any tips that they require.
That's it for now but would like to say what a great job you all are doing and keep up the banter good or bad
Hope to be able to meet one or two of you soon visiting Chester, Banham, Blackpool, Edinburgh in November maybe see you there
Goodbye

When you put it like that then yes you are correct. Dudley has many short comings and you have alerted me to another that I had no knowledge of.

My point was it IS bad, thats why I said it, and as I said the thread is personal opinion.

Enjoy your trip, wont you be meeting anyone at Dudley? ;):D

Unfortunatly due to field work and appointments I have with other charities i will not be visiting Dudley untill at least May 2010
I am looking forward to visiting Chester and looking at the orangutang enclosures there as in other magazines and forums people have differing views on these fromabsolutly great to unfortunate exibit of the future but then again it will be better then the one at Dudley.
Dawn I have enjoyed reading your personal opinions and think you have many good points but when you've to as many zoos as myself then unfortunatly Dudley is not that bad.
Hope to be able to have a chat when I get back and maybe one day meet up with you because you seem to know what your talking about
and thank you to everyone for not being to hard on me
see you soon

I'm afraid I have not visited Dudley for several years now simply because it makes me feel depressed. It is possible to follow what is happening there though from the various photos on the Gallery. The semi derelict Lubetkin buildings and the Ape House problem are the main issues. Dudley seems to have perpetual financial(and other) problems which it has so far been unable to put right. I do sometimes wonder if it has a longterm future as it has struggled along for so many years now without any major improvements possible.

Totally agree with you.

johnstoni; I don't agree that the giraffe enclosure is much worse than that of other zoos. Blackpool said:
If I'd have seen this I would have been very angry, there is no excuse for it (ok I wasn't there, so maybe there was an excuse, but the way it's been told it doesn't sound good).
I certainly would have spoken to someone at the zoo that day, and kept following it up until I had an answer.

And 5 Remember to wear a hard hat incase any of these buildings that you like falls down on your head!:D:D

I think you will like the buildings, but not the state they are in, the much talked about polar bear pit is a work of art I have to admit, but just not for the poor animals that had to indure it for all their lives until they moved to a better place.

I like the old bear ravine (shock horror), it's sad that it's decaying in the one corner, it could be put to good use if only work could be done on it. I'm now thinking that it would be a better place for the giraffe's than where they are now.

In fact Karen would you mind being a judge, as someone that's never been before you don't have in your mind what animal was there, or what animal should be there or whatever, after you have been, just look at the place as a whole and tell uswhich animals would you move around to where to better use the space.
Remember to also look by the entrance area and see the vast unused hillside (under the disused chairlift), and see what would work in there.

I offered an opinion, it wasnt me that started any name calling or insults was it, perhaps if you read the posts properly you would of seen that!

Secondly, YOUR opinion is just that, my comments are the truth and I stick by them. Also if you had read the posts  you would see that my concerns were taken to the relevant people only to be ignored, a thing Dudley seem to do regularly, and not only in the complaints line either!!

Whether you rate the place or not holds no interest for me, this thread was on PERSONAL opinions on the Zoo which I duly stated! ;)

we know its personal opininos its in the title...

and youve just slagged off his opinion will make yours sound like its come straight from a reliable source e.g EAZA

its on their list to do ^^

Im just wondering about this coz some people seem negative others seem postive.

I have just come back from a visit to the zoo. Been going to this zoo since I was knee high to a tiger. I have in the past had a moan like most people about the lack of money available to the zoo. English Heritage say the enclosures are listed. If they think that why don't they put their money where their mouth is & help out. If you can't knock them down why not try & improve them.
I walked round the zoo which has suffered from lack of financial support for many a year but still many years on walk away with the feeling I have had a good day. I think this is owed to the great staff they have & think everyone should visit with an open mind. No they do not have million pound enclosures, monorails's & 5 star restaurants but they have animals, happy animals & isn't that what zoo's are about. Lets hope this zoo is here for years to come & finally one day gets the funding they need.

Im sorry who have I slagged off? Please show me where I have slagged anyone off, Ill thank you not to make assumptions. I have offered an opinion on a place I visit a lot, I can compare it to others I have visited, would you like a list of the places I have visited this year alone, for your perusal of course?;) Then you can if you wish point out shortfalls in any of those places, and Ill glady revist and offer an opinion on those.

Its ME that has been slagged off, called names, and been treated like Dudley is perfect and I just cant see it, well Im sorry but it isnt and no matter how much you want to have a pop at me it wont change it. Perhaps your anger would be better directed at Dudley Zoo and the suggestions of improvements that NEED to be made.:)

Dawn B & everyone else. I think it would be a good time to accept everyone elses opinions & chill out. Lets keep the threads clear of slagging off & use them for more happy comments.
Dawn B like your photos on your website. Upload some to zoo chat please so we all can enjoy them.

I absolutely respect everyones opinion Stephen, its just that everyone appears to make excuses for problems and conditions that are inexcusable. Maybe its just I expect too much? However I can only gauge my comparisons on other Zoos and parks I have visited.

Everyone is allowed an opinion but we have to remember alot of people can be protective at what they keep close to them. I once said Marwell zoo was ok but not my cup of tea but found many people thought it to be heaven on earth. Sometimes people look at different aspects in their way of saying what a good zoo is.

Yes I agree, but being respectful would be a better way to put the point across, instead of rude comments.

Im happy to forgive and forget...:)
