Lowland gorillas in Europe 2009

There are three original females in Jambo's group. Mandji, Lobo, Mintha. Mintha is the one sitting at the edge of the group, having her own daughter. Kisiwa has no baby at this moment as she lost at the end of this winter her baby. The funny behaving young gorilla would be as far as I can guess Gyasi, daughter of Dalilah (now at Kerkrade). Gyasi seems to do the in human eyes named funny things.
I don't if it is alright to compare to much these primates with the human standard (as far as there is one).

No, its probably better not to, but you could certainly say she shows 'unusual' or 'erractic' behaviour for a Gorilla. Any ideas why she should behave like this?

It's sometimes hard not to see ourselves in other great apes. But the reason I asked about her is that I'm interested in animal behaviour and always want to know why they are doing what they're doing.

More information about the plans for the exansion of Basle`s great ape house:
ZOO BASEL - Aktuell - Aktuelles aus den ZOO Basel

There is a map of the great ape house that shows the exisiting enclosures in light green and the planned expansion in dark green. Interestingly, they are not adding space from the big visitor area to the ape`s cages, the cages will be enlarged to the back, leaving the visitor area untouched. I am surprised that there is so much space there to double the cages, but I have never been behind the scenes.

Re the outdoor enclosures, they are planning 5 large cages (see pics in link above) with a total area of 2000 m² - 400 m² each. I hope the cages will be connected so that each of the 3 groups will have acess to more then one cage at least some days during the week.

Interesting link Yassa,

It seems all that vertical space in the ouitdoor areas will not be accessiable to the gorillas?
Does the article mention anything about the mesh they are using for the outdoor enclosure walls?

Thanks

I've heard that female gorilla 'Sakina'(Jambo x Kishka) may (at long last) be leaving Jersey. Presumably because she does not breed with their male 'Ya Kwanza' Does anyone know where she might be sent?

At present there are areas behind the indoor cages that are planted so these will obviously be used. It seems there won't be much area left for service passages etc, either. I can't see why they don't use part of the large visitor hall but from this they evidently won't do so.

On a previous plan it appeared the outside areas would be islands. I am glad they are now going to be cages- whatever the design these covered areas will be better used by the animals than any open plan islands would. I also heard they may not keep their Orangutans longterm.

Sorry no idea Pertinax.. I think it`s a good idea to move the females Ya Kwanza isn`t breeding with and bring in 1 or better 2 young, genetically important females that are NOT related to Jersey`s famous Jambo so that Ya Kwanza`s genes are preserved not just in combination with the overrepresented Jersey line. The oldest female offspring from La Valle des Singes would be a great candidate, or the 9 year old female N`Gambe from Cologne (father wildborn Kim, mother from Apenheul).

Zooman: I don`t know about the mesh. I noticed too that the huge vertical space is not useable for the gorillas on the picture, but I hope very much that the finished enclosures will look differently and offer much more climbing space then what is showed on that pic. The cages for gorillas and chimps will be 11 m high and those for the orang utan 16 m - that doesn`t make sense when the vertical space is not availible through ropes, high climbing trees ect.

Re the Basle orangs, the breeding animals (male, 2 females and a female infant) will apparently be sent to Gelsenkirchen during the renovation and only the old females will stay in Basle. But the plan is to move them back to Basle when the expansion is finished. I`d rather see them staying in Gelsenkirchen and Basle getting a new, young group.

In principal, yes, but the problem with Ya Kwanza is he doesn't seem interested even in a younger female- he has not mated 'Bambuti' the younger female that came from Melbourne a good while after he was already established at Jersey. So I wonder if there is any point in sending yet another young female there?:(

Oh, okay.

They also have some problems with the Gorillas rather- the male Kisoro only breeds with female Joas, while there are currently four either old or non-breeding females -Goma & Katie(old) Quarta & Faddama(don't breed with Kisoro) so they need to also make a few changes perhaps?

What I've seen happen before is that 1. that the Artist impression is not exactly like the real thing and 2. when the new exhibit is designed they don't want it to look to 'cluttered' so not all the space is utilised. Later, once the Apes are actually using it, they realise the shortcomings and add more complex and higher climbing equipment. (ZSL Gorilla Kingdom outside was an example)

Maybe it will not be impossible that female gorilla Sakina is moving to Kerkrade.

I`d try it, given how underrepresented he is. Maybe he just doesn`t like Bambuti. After all, the dominance thing is a good explanantion why he is not mating Sakina and Kishka, so it`s just one female he is rejecting without reason. They should certainly closely monitor the situation and doing something if another, young, cycling female doesn`t get pregnant within a reasonable time frame - let`s a max. 2 years.

Yes, maybe one more try with a very well socialised and normal female perhaps (though Bambuti is too). I think if there's no mating afer a year she should move on. Even better in my opinion would be to replace YK with a 'normal' male and let Mapema do the breeding for this line at Duisburg.

Not sure they really are going to return. There seems to be some uncertainty about this as if it hasn't been decided yet.

I've been looking again at the Plan for extension of the indoor cages. I wonder if the areas bordered 'Red' represent new areas- so is the back of the House being extended to allow for the larger cages? Presumably the 'five large cages' outdoors will be for both Monkeys & Apes meaning they have(or will) cut down on the number of Species they have ?

A member from other Spanish forum, says that he have read in a German forum that Friday will come to Bioparc Valencia, a 5-year male gorilla named "Kabuli" from Frankfurt. He is half brother "Dorle" and brother "Fossey" and will come later 2 other young males to form a bachelor group, but he don't know (yet) since what zoo they come.

I can understand this transfer as Frankfurt have compatability problems since the new male 'Viatu' came from Basel. The other, younger son of Rebecca alreay had to move(to Rotterdam) because Viatu would not tolerate him.

Death of Chessington 'Kaja'

The adult female Kaja at Chessington was euthanased in early September owing to Gut problems (see current UK thread on handreared cats). She was aged 30. Born at Howletts in 1979 (Kisoro x Juju) she was sent to Chessington in 1989 and has lived there since.

Kaja had two livebirths and two stillbirths. One daughter(nonbreeding) Matibe is still at Howletts, the second daughter(breeding) Asili is at Chessington.
