While this is on the top of page, has there been any news recently?
No news is good news, which probably means none of the Gibbons,Chimps or Orangs have popped their clogs or bred either as very little else gets posted about on here,so a question to all you Monkey World lover`s how are Chester`s old Barbary Macaques doing?

^ I don't think they have any Barbary Macaques, I think they may have had some a long time ago but they all passed away.

They still had some 3 or 4 years ago so its possible,I realy only posted the question to prove that if its not a Gibbon,Orang or Chimp then none of the regular Monkey World posters notice that something has happened!!!

That's not true at all. I take an interest in all the animals at Monkey World.

I have never seen them in the 3 years or so I've visited.

There are not really any 'regular' posters to the thread because they get such an unpleasant response if they don't post in a way that is deemed acceptable by the Zoochat heavies that they go away and don't bother again.

Since you are interested several of the stump-tailed macaques died this year, there are now only seven remaining.

The baby wooly Monkey that died earlier in the year was found to have been hurt in a fall.

The female siamang gibbon died from a ruptured bowel caused by a peach stone.

A squirrel monkey was put to sleep earlier in the year and another female who had been kept in a caravan arrived after the death of her mate.

Two cotton-top tamarins arrived after being seized from their owners who didn't have correct paperwork.

TJ the capuchin, from the British pet trade died this year.

I guess in that case they have finally died out

Seeing as most of the zoochat heavies don`t know what species Peanut is,is to much to ask those people that do know to put which species Peanut is so they don`t have to ask stupid question of what species is Peanut?

Thanks for the update on some of the other species kept by Monkey World.

Such a request is entirely reasonable, it all depends on how it's phrased!

Firstly I would like to know which of the orangutans are pregnant? are there plans to bring in any more orangutans, or have monkey world had their share know?

Second I just had to say who and what are the zoochat "heavies" I found this quite amusing reading it form my laptop :D

As far as I know only Hsiao-quai (Bornean Orangutan originally brought from Taiwanese rescue centre) is pregnant (by Gordon, son of zoo bred Amy & Banji). Hq's son, Kai, with Tuan is now 4 1/2.

You would hope one of the other orangs living with Tuan (male brought from Taiwan, father of 3 infants with 2 different females also Taiwanese rescues) might be pregnant soon - Lucky (also from Taiwan) seems to be his favourite. I just noticed the females are only in their mid-teens apart from Ro-Ro mother of Hsiao-Ning and Dinda (with Tuan) & Amy.

There is a new orang nursery which went up very quickly but doesn't seem to have made much progress for a very long time and hopefully the new baby won't need it as Hq looked after her previous infant.

There are still some males at the rescue centre in Taiwan that MW is supposed to be bringing to keep as a bachelor group (Jim Cronin mentioned this in the past so it goes back a long way but I was told a couple of months ago that it still theoretically on the cards)

They've also talked for a long time about splitting the large outside enclosure into two so that the two groups can all be outside at the same time but there's no sign of that.

Off the orang thread - they have been trying for some years to rescue Coco a Mexican beach photographers chimp (also owned Bryan who has been at MW a couple of years and had had nearly all his teeth removed - just broken off) it appeared to be getting somewhere but it stalled at the time of the swineflu outbreak.

Zoochat heavies - somewhat tongue in cheek but MW is not popular so it seems to be OK to be rude to people who would be treated with politeness if committing exactly the same heinous crime on a different thread.

Thank you OrangePerson. A bachelor group sound interesting but if breeding of the orangs are continued I can see the centre quickly running out of space. Are the orangutan nursery's temporary only? as i thought they already had a nursery?

The old nursery was apparently meant to be temporary, I think they intend to knock it down but who knows, they'll probably find a need for something else to go in there! The new one opens onto the same outside area as they use now.

I think there is still space for at least one other biggish enclosure.

Two of the young orangutans belong to other institutions Lingga (Paris) and Joly (Russia I think) and so will go back or to wherever they are told when they are old enough.

Barbary Macaques

Killing time while waiting for someone to arrive, I had a look at the Monkey World website for information about the Barbary Macaques.
Winter 1999: there were 7 macaques
Spring 2000: death of The Old Lady aged approx 40 is reported
Winter 2001: 6 macaques 'getting on in years'
Spring 2003: remaining elderly macaques living out their days with 3 elderly stump tailed macaques
Winter 2003: 2 individuals left - May & June - sharing a house with 2 ruffed lemurs. They wanted them to go together so that no one individual was left alone when anyone passed away
I couldn't find any further mention of them so presumably, like many other zoos, Monkey World didn't make a big thing of their deaths.

When I was there last, the sign by the new building said the nursery was for their role as the European Nursery for orangutans so it's not just for any of their own babies that need to be hand reared.

Thats right, both the red ruffeds and the macaques passed away eventually.

Yes, MW has the official title of European Creche for orangutans, the only question it poses is where do they go once they are old enough... I know they were trying to introduce Aris into the adult group before he passed away. He was technically property of another zoo, but when MW gets them in the creche, does that mean the other zoo no longer owns them? I'm a little confused.

I think you will find any Orangutans from other zoos which are reared at MonkeyWorld will remain under the jurisdiction of the EEP. However, its possible some couldstay on at Monkeyworld as they grow up, particularly those not required for future breeding by other Zoos. My guess is the EEP will still expect to have the final say on their futures.
