Toronto Zoo Southside African Rainforest Pavilion Renovation now underway!

It was either Garth or Darth, can't remember exactly

Another possibility could be a foundation for a holding area? But now were just speculating :D

Yep, my mind's at work at what it could be :D I think it'd also be great if they can bring the Fennec Foxes up on display. Maybe if not in the renovated area, maybe they can create a spot for them by the Naked Molerats, etc.

Ah ha! I found one of my old TZ maps (2006) and if you look at the side of the pavilion on that map, you can see the outlines in yellow of the two former outdoor habitats (bongo and aldabra tortoise)

It looks like the area Ungulate is describing is in the same vicinity as the mandrills (I'm not extremely good at navigating the Pavilion, but i'm just going by memories) but would that be to much money (an outdoor exhibit that is)? They had to do all those budget scale backs, so I doubt we'll get an outdoor exhibit (Although that would be nice)

We got to hope for the best. It is in the best interest to have an outdoor mandrill exhibit. I have heard that they love snow! Much like gorillas (snow ball fights!)

My impression of the excavation was that it was a utility line being put in (beside the trenches there was a coil of yellow tubing) - I haven't heard anything about outdoor exhibit spaces being added, and would agree with ZooGoer about $$$.

The interior of the pavilion is visible (for now) to the public - there is a bank of windows looking in towards the mandrill exhibit across from the elephant house. (Take a peek before it gets covered over!)

Nile soft-shell turtles: It was Garth with a G ... not really a "mate" for Dotty (with a Y), since they were both males!

Fennec foxes: our last one passed away a year or two ago, so we no longer have this species.

Its probably something to do with the piping if there is tubing beside it, probably drainage pipes.

Are they going to block the windows to look into the pavilion? I was really hoping to get pictures before it! NOTE TO ANY ONE GOING TO THE ZOO TAKE PICTURES OF WHAT IS LEFT OF THE AFRICAN PAVILION!!!!!!!!!! (Hopefully that got the attention of some people)

Not to seem rude but Ungulate are you sure that Dotty is spelt with a "y" on all of her files its Dottie?

Where was the fennec fox housed?

Where was the fennec fox housed?

That is how it is spelled on HIS (!) official file ... keeper choice may tend towards Dottie, though ;)

The fennec foxes were confiscated pets given to the zoo by the Humane Society, I think. They were housed in Unit 3 of the Health Unit and were never on exhibit.

Ungulate, are you sure there isn't another Dottie? Cause the one I am refering to is a female?

Hold on, I know why.

Here is the correction:

There are two turtles at the zoo by the names of Dottie, and Dotty.
Dotty a Nile Soft Shelled Turtle (Male)
Dottie an Eastern Spiny Soft Shelled Turtle (Female) (This turtle can be seen on exhibit in the Americas and is also used for outreach)

Now I remember going through two files, one from Americas, and one from Africa.

There are 3 new (prob.) Amphibian exhibits in the African Pavilion where the African Clawed Frogs were. They now have larg fish in the Dwarf Croc. exhibit. The hatch roofing is back in the African Pavilion.

The demolition has also started in the African Pavilion it looks very barren and bored and you can see right through the pavilion!

Last time I was there everything was basically dirt, I think the opening date will be in the summer.
