Belfast Zoo Tigers

The last pair at Chester were (as Zoogiraffe says) born in that very enclosure on 23rd April 1989. They were named Korda and Strelka. Their parents were Omu and Natasha, and this was their only litter.

Omu was born at Chester in 1979 and Natasha at Edinburgh in 1987.

The original pair Chang and Lotus arrived early in 1976 from Howletts.

Where the parents moved to other collections after the cubs where weaned, as i only remember seeing 2 tigers in that enclosure during the 90's them being Korda and Stelka

I thought this was going to be about Belfast's exciting new mystery animal, the only ones outside SE Asia. I don't suppose there's any news on that is there? I'm visiting soon so I hope there is...

So did I!! I was almost at a hyper-ventilating state of excitement!!

Omu died in 1992 and Natasha left the zoo in 1997

There were big cat enclosures in West Zoo until the Twilight Zone was built on the site. Since you only recall seeing the cubs in the tiger enclosure perhaps the other tigers were housed in the now demolised enclosures. I can't remember myself.

The date of the start of construction of the Twilight Zone was 1997 when the old female tiger left Chester. Perhaps another ZooChatter knows more about this.

Sorry - a bit of topic here but have Belfast Zoo received another female Barbary Lion because ISIS states 2.3 even though Lily has left and ISIS has been updated lately because it has accounted for the movement of one of the male cubs, Boris, to a Czech zoo.??? (formerly 3.3 at the end of September - Lily moved over summer)

I am aware that ISIS can be unreliable sometimes...:)

That would fit as they have kept back Charlie one of the young males. Mabey they will make up a 2nd pair and then move them out the collection.

Im afraid we only have 2.2, it may have been missed on ISIS! :)

Has the female Sumatran Tiger arrived from Spain yet? If not when is she expected?

No she hasn't I believe. I think (real difference between what I think and what is reality BTW) She arrives either winter this year or early next year.

I yet have to see Kabus for myself so next time I go I'll have to camp outside his exhibit to get a glimpse of him!!!:D He is an elusive fellow
