Chester Zoo Zoo Visit, 18th October 2009

Visited the zoo today, it was quite cold and full of scouts!!

The old bush dog enclosure now has two yellow mongoose inside not sure whether these are the mongoose that are usually with the red river hogs as we saw no sign of the young mongoose born a few months ago. Orla the giraffe was out in the paddock. She is the new pure rothschild from Burger Zoo in the Netherlands. She is quite small and is around 18 months old she seemed to be keeping herself away from the group though thorn was trying to nuzzle her but she didnt seem very keen and keeped moving away from him. Once Bella is a little older she and kelly will be moved on to another collection. The keepers were having trouble trying to round up the baby capybara so that they could let out the Tapir it appears they are being kept seperate for the time being. Asoka and Asha were both playing with there ball and scent bags today though Asoka did seem to take a dislike to somebody walking past with a lion balloon. Also the gardens outside the Fountain shop have now been partially returfed and some are just bare soil. The meerkats are currently off show as well as most of monkey island.

Do you know where Kelly and Bella are moving too? Also do you know when Molly and Margaret left? Thanks

No sorry dont know where Kelly & Bella are moving too. Not sure when they left maybe a regular visitor to London may know?

Franka the Spectacled Bear has also arrived.

From the photo of her (if that is her) on their website-she's a 'real' spectacled bear, its fairly rare to see one with the FULL 'spectacle' markings encircling the whole face, which give these bears their name. She could pass this marking on to some of her cubs too.

They arrived on the 6th. I believe she was allowed out immediately and by all accounts they had some difficulty persuading her to come back indoors. She is a very active bear and showing really well in the exhibit.

she looks great. like pertinax says she has wonderful facial markings and hopefully will breed in the future:)

Actually, though I've seen plenty of Spectacled Bears, I've never seen one with such complete markings. I'm presuming they have not introduced the pair yet- hope it goes safely, bearing in mind the tragedy with Lodja.

They have been introduced. Keepers are on watch throughout the day. On my visit last week she was using her head and keeping well away from Sangay. They met once whilst I was watching, but practically ignored each other.

She is a very attrative animal, nice markings and seems quite small compared to the other Spectacled Bears Chester has kept previously.

Thanks for the update. Its good they have got them together with no(so far)apparent trouble- I can see they aren't taking any risks though. Hopefully they will prove compatable longterm.
