i have a couple of days off coming up, and have decided to visit a zoo further afield, i know a lot of zoos only open at weekends during the winter but i will be going mid week, my other half loves tigers and i love hippos, so somewhere that has either or both of these would be fantastic, so any suggestions??
we have membership to zsl so would love to see other places.:)

i can't say i've ever known a zoo to be only open on weekends during winter (apart from the safari parks which close completely for the winter season).

Places which keep both tigers and common hippos are Whipsnade (which I assume you've visited being a member of the ZSL), West Midland Safari Park and Longleat.

Places which keep tigers and pygmy hippos are (London and Whipsnade aside) Colchester, Edinburgh and Marwell.

And Flamingoland, though not sure what their winter opening schedule is.

EDIT: Which actually means that every UK zoo with Common Hippos has tigers.

Zoos that keep both tigers and hippos are:

Whipsnade (Amur Tigers, Common and Pygmy Hippos)
Edinburgh (Sumatran Tigers, Pygmy Hippos)
London (Sumatran Tigers, Pygmy Hippos)
South Lakes (Sumatran Tigers, Pygmy Hippos)
Marwell (Amur Tigers, Pygmy Hippos)
Colchester (Amur and Bengal Tigers, Pygmy Hippos)

West Midlands, Longleat and Flamingo Land also have this combination, but the former only opens weekends in winter and the latter don't open in winter at all.

thanks guys, im glad ive got some options! even if there are no hippos i dont mind.

czjimmy; i have seen that longleat, west mids are open only weekends in winter so i just didnt want to turn up at a park/zoo thats closed and be dissappointed.

Colchester may be a good option as we have two pygmy hippos (freddy and venus) and two amur tigers (igor and anoushka) and a white bengal tiger (sasha). Our pygmy hippo venus is currently pregnant and is due to give birth soon. Also a baby rhino has been born through AI and is a UK first!

Will probably take around 2 hours from leighton buzzard to colchester :)

thanks zooleopard, we have been thinking of going to colchester zoo as part of a group (we run a suzuki club) sometime so maybe we could go have a sneaky peak first! lol
wow baby pygmy hippo! cute! keep me informed!!! i saw marwells baby pygmy when i went there at beginning of this year.

Venus is due to give birth very soon October/November time :D

Also Zamba the white rhino calf is only in the hardstand area of the paddock at the moment. He can still be viewed easily from the Kingdom of the Wild Balcony.

How about Dublin?? They have Sumatran tigers with cubs and they also have hippos, and its a lovely city perfect for a couple of days away

it isn't in the uk

Errrrmm where does it state it has to be in the UK?

Kaz stated she wanted to visit a zoo further afield, not in the UK.

Dublin is IMO one of the best zoo's in BIAZA and with cheap air fares and regular ferry sailings from Wales and North England very easy to get to!

not sure we can afford to go this side of xmas but youve put an idea in my head now! lol. think ill check if easy jet fly over there from luton!;)
thank you.:)
