White Lion Protection Trust

Well, what do you know, according to their site white lions were "hunted to extinction." And we all thought there were none around because they were from a rare recessive gene that naturally occurred in the wild only once every few decades. Boy are we ignorant! ;)
 
The whole white lion white tiger debate is very controversial, i myself am still not sure what my opinion is on the whole thing. However, this is a non profit organisation trying to give something back to nature. Most of us are probably in agreement that they should focus on all lions regardless of their colour, but in this day & age beggers can't be choosers. Lion numbers are dropping all over Africa and more projects like this one are desperatly needed, & maybe if 'so called' conservationists put their own money into saving the pure bred tawny lions, there would be no need for the White Lion Protection Trust. I personally would rather see white lions thriving in the wild, than no lions at all...

Conservationists ARE working to save tawny ("normal") lions, with projects like Laikipia Predator Project (which is largely zoo funded). The problem is not breeding them, the problem is there is no room for them outside protected reserves, most of which are already filled with the maximum number of lions they can support. Releasing white lions will not make ranchers any less likely to poison them.
 
You see i have only heard of a small number of these projects, and i praise them i really do, working in rehabilitating and releasing wildlife is what i want to do myself in the near future. But most people will never be aware of projects like these simply because they're not as 'unique'. Although white lions are breath taking to look at i find them just as majestic as any tawny lions, but because they're unique, they get more fame, more funding and more help. This isn't the way it should be, but it is. Although they should concentrate on all African lions instead of treating the whites as a separate species, the White Lion Protection trust are still doing something for lions.

But Ive Seen 3/4 of them, ive seen african (newquay zoo), asian (chester zoo), white (west midlands safari park) and ill hopefully see barbary at port lympe,

but im worried, im worried for everything

the asian lions desperately need introductions into other regions outside of gir forest, and if so, would be on the rebound.

why? its nothing more than an aberrant mutation that has been propagated in captivity.
 
How can they "give these back to nature"? They won't be able to hunt properly due to not being able to hide, the fate of any white tigers that are born in the wild.
 
hi im new sorry to go abit of topic but wat are your thoughts on white lions in zoos. my family and friends see normal lions and will walk right past them at taronga zoo. but will sit and listen to talks on lions at mogo zoo were the whites are. and my uncle thought lions wernt really that exciting at taronga but at mogo discovered how good they are. and every one i talk to know about white lions at mogo zoo so wouldnt that be a good thing to have some so people. who think lions are plain and boring acturally get interested in them. im just looking at it from the public point of view
 
Try doing a forum search for "White Lion" you will find a myriad of threads and posts.
 
My thoughts on white lions are well known hence White Lion Breeding Is Not Conservation but I am not against them altogether. They are a popular figure in the folklore of some African tribes and it would be a pity to never have them occur. I do think it would be better just to have 'white' occur naturally from time to time as in badgers, crows, rabbits and foxes in the UK. Surely it is more magical and have more meaning like that?

Sure white lions usually generate a fair bit of interest amongst the public.

And a two headed cow would be a lot more interesting than a whole herd of cows that only had one head each.

Freaks of nature, whether they be human or animal, have always fascinated people. PT Barnum made a career and business out of exhibiting both human and animal freaks.

Not true. Several adult wild white tigers were seen (and hunted) in India in the early 1900's. One was even filmed by Jim Corbett from a hide.
