Colchester Zoo My Visit to Colchester 24.10.09

It's out there in BIG WRITING around the zoo! We don't even have a dedicated reptile section anymore so don't hold your breath for any reptiles amphibians and other invertebrates soon! :)

Darn, my subtle attempt at manipulation has failed! :D

I'm not really complaining - there may not be lots of herps but boy does the mammal collection make up for it!

you didnt offend me at all :) different opinions are wonderful. i hope to visit dudley again soon as my friend (the one that worked there) said that the chimp enclosure has been re-vamped as well :)

thanks for the welcome too by the way :)

i see you went before the chimps were done its ALOT better now, even i have to say that, their next major project is the orangs

On that topic, there's an interesting paper in an edition of the IZYB (I forget which particular one at the moment) which goes into great detail about the planting efforts that Chester Zoo underwent when they redeveloped their chimp islands.

These included (from memory) choosing specific species of plant that chimps disliked the taste of and planting enough sacrifical species that the chimps would not touch the larger more imposing species. It also mentions the planting of certain long grasses to act as enrichment devices to satsify their destructive habits

the use lorel (correct spelling) coz they tastes bad XD

I went to Colchester for the first time on Saturday, and enjoyed it very much.

I loved the mandrills, at Chester they never seem to be out and about when I'm there and I think they're stunning animals. Even managed a picture of a very small baby with its mother.

I've never seen aardvarks before!

That is because Colchester's are shut outside during the day, Chester's aren't.

The Mandrills were lovely to watch on Saturday :)
Don't usually get to see them v often as they're at the other end of the zoo to the chimps and Raj. Going back tomorrow to see the chimps, orangs and cappies :)

Also you need to pop around that way first thing, as you can often see them on the island as soon as the zoo is open.

Oh dear, I'm usually sprinting to the orangs at that time. I'll just have to go more often!

Colchester's group of 24 Mandrills are always up to something. Two new additions were born last week and are progressing well. Also, don't forget to visit baby Zamba. He may be inside if the weathers not great.

Glad you enjoyed your visit.
