Best seat in a zoo

Yesterday and this morning l spent at Adelaide Zoo.

When at a zoo l always look for a seat, with the best view of an enclosure to have my lunch at.

Yesterday l found my new favorite seat in a zoo!

2pm sitting on the seat on a raised walkway, under the shade of a Morton bay fig tree app 120 years old and HUGE! Not good with measurements but it was big maybe 100ft tall and wide!

This tree is the enclosure for a family of Dusty Languars. Who apparently regularly produce offspring. Ensuring an active display of animals in an almost perfect setting. If l turn around on the seat l am looking at a family of Simangs on a island enclosure with a water moat and next to them on another island with a pair of White Cheeked Gibbons. All clearly viable from this one perfect seat!

Would be interested to hear about other favorite zoo seats.

I would be interested in pictures from that seat, please? :)

@zooman: I know exactly where you had your lunch, as I can recall visiting the Adelaide Zoo in 2007 and experiencing the same great moment as you. Between the siamangs, white-cheeked gibbons and dusky langurs I wasn't sure where to look! The langur exhibit, where they have full access to a massive Morton bay fig, is probably the best exhibit at the zoo, and when I was there I saw at least 3 malayan tapirs in the same enclosure as the langurs.

I will try to find out how to upload the video from my phone for you.

A long time ago l stopped taking pictures two reasons one l take really bad pictures and secondly just had way to many pictures of zoos that l never really looked at. Unfortunately l actually threw out my collection a year before l found zoochat...

So where is your favourite seat matey? Also how big would you say that Morton Bay Fig is?

There was a sheltered picnic place on the axis of the raised path that overlooks the okapi and champman's zebra paddocks at Marwell, and I used to always eat lunch there till it was demolished. :(

@zooman: the Morton Bay fig is enormous, and provides a spectacular home for the dusky langurs. I'm not sure as to how large it is, but your 100 foot estimate sounds about right.

One of my all-time favourite seats is at the Bronx Zoo, where my wife and I had lunch by the Baboon Reserve exhibit. That 5-acre area has the multi-acre gelada/nubian ibex/rock hyrax enclosure, and there is a small cafe and seating area that overlooks the exhibit.

i know where you mean, but the only problem with that vewing area was the fact that there was always loads of waps by the bins!

Marwell's introduced a lot of wasp traps, but there's not much you can do about it at the end of the day. I remember being stung by one at Marwell when I was three.

Yup - this is a great spot. That tree is fantastic.

Here are some photos from the gallery:

I'm not too much into favourite seats, but one that I like is at Taronga Zoo at the top of the giraffe enclosure.

During the day it's out in the open and in summer can be very hot. The only times I've really bothered to si there has been on several New Years Eves - in the cool of the evening I would sit there with a pizza and cold drink, watch the giraffes, watch the sun go down behind the Sydney Harbour Bridge, and then watch the fireworks on the Harbour.

Haven't done that for some years now - the zoo is packed with Zoo Friends and Sponsors on NYE and that location appears to be a favourite with a few dozen families.

:p

hehe when i went there was a layer 2cm thick of dead wasps!

I’d vote for the one of the benches overlooking the gorillas at Bristol Zoo. There’s a lack of benches with views in UK zoos (at least views of animals) but these benches are a great place to sit and enjoy the gorillas.

I agree with you there, nice to sit there with a bit of lunch and watch over the gorillas.

At Whipsnade my favourite would be any of the outdoor picnic tables/benches dotted around all over the park. Good for stopping and eating lunch/admiring the view- there is nearly always some animal species within your vista as well- elephant, rhino, antelope, deer etc.
