Twycross Zoo Matadi & Bolus Update thread

Shows a great shot of him.

Thanks for letting me know how to search a gallery as I genuinely didn't know you could do that. There are things in some galleries i just end up trawling through the pages so now i know. That pictures great. How old is Bolus. He looks like an angry silver-back. really hope he gets on with Matadi.

Please, please ... it really is Boulas.

Do not use Bolus ... it is a derogatory word for turd in Dutch (so, I get kinda confused)!

'Boulas' is not angry in this photo- he is hooting and chestbeating at the same time- an expression of excitement or wellbeing- not anger.

Boulas is 23 years old. He is the eldest of four brothers, Oumbie is the youngest of these.

Introducing Matadi when he arrives may take some time though. They will probably see how they get on with the mesh windows between them first, before risking it. (Boulas did get on well with the younger male at Belfast).

Hey, I went Twycross yesterday and saw that Matadi has integrated well into the other group. The three gorillas have access to the normal outside area as well as both their original indoor area and Joe's old indoor area. His wounds have healed brilliantly

Was the house open?

That is good news indeed. Apart from being good for Matadi, it will also benefit Biddy and Bongo too, by giving them some new stimulus/enrichment by his boisterous nature - they have always looked so bored on their own.

Nice one! With gorillas Twycross may be finally getting out of the woods ... :)

It is equally fine that a non-breeding group is accomodated as well (as on top of bachelor groups, we need groups of non-breeders or post-reproductive to free up space for breeding animals).

I think Boulas(if he still comes) will be joining the two older females as a 'mixed sex retirement' group-it is quite a satisfactory arrangement, though if he's fertile there could still be a surprise- the female Biddy is not that old, is w/c and she has only three descendants. One of them is now living with her- grandson 'Matadi.'

If Bolus did breed it would be amazing and Twycross would be back on track for gorillas. Is Bolus proven to be Infertile?

Is Bolus proven to be Infertile?

BOulas, not Bolus.

He is not proved to be infertile(as far as I know) but despite mating he hasn't bred during several years at Belfast. However, there may be other causes e.g. stress in the group, or a problm with the females, which has caused them not to concieve during that time.

Hey guys, does anyone know if any of the two females in with Boulas are pregnant, as it was reported when he first got there in the papers however do not know how true this was. any one have any ideas?

Will have a job he`s still in Belfast!!!!!!!!

Hopefully if he does breed itll be a sign of things to come at Twycross, possibly regular gorilla breeding! Yeah I might just wait. Just wondered if anyone here knew. Thanks anyways.

BOULAS is still in BELFAST and not at TWYCROSS YET!!!!!

Twycross' Twitter feed is reporting that a new male Gorilla (presumably Boulas) will be arriving in the next week.
