West Midland Safari and Leisure Park 'Big' news from West Midlands

Indian rhinos are definitely going to be at WMSP this year. I visited today and this is the front cover of the new guide map.

By the looks of that map cover they are not of to the best of starts, doctoring the picture, not good!

Does anyone have any indication how many they will be getting and where they will be sourced from?

Is it possible that one could come from Whipsnade as they seem to have a few young animals that maybe need to be transferred to new homes at some point in time

Whipsnade's last Indian Rhino calf was a male born 5/11/07 if they wanted 2:0 then he could be a suitable candidate.

I imagine it will be another 'male only situation' at least to start with. An interesting departure-the first Safari Park in UK to have this species.

Whipsnade's young male would certainly be a contender, maybe joined by another from Europe? I doubt Whipsnade will want to part with the young female anyway- more likely to keep her as she wasn't sired by their new bull.

The second male could be Samir, born in Stuttgart in August 2008.

The young male born in Rotterdam will go to Beauval together with female Mandulja from TP Berlin, and the only other young indian rhino near weaning age I remember right now is a female born in May 2008 in Plankendahl. If Edinburgh sends one of their males to Chester (after the loss of Patna), the Plankendahl female could become Edinburgh`s future breeding female. Or West Midlands start with 1.1 instead of a bachelor group.

I believe one of the Edinburgh males is definately to go to Chester.

This is good, nice to see another zoo housing them :)

News

Looks like they got the one horned rhinos in January. Despite people thinking that they'd have to go down the Edinburgh route of having 2 males the article shows in fact they've received a breeding pair.
