Just to let anyone who is interested that the new male rhino from Denmark has safetly arrived at the zoo. The Kingdom of the wild building is currently closed to the public to allow the new arrival to settle in. Also the male giraffe is due to arrive in the next couple of weeks :D

Which one of the Knuthenborg/Bandholm males has been acquired?

Great he has arrived but OH NO that the buildings closed we are going in the week and thats our favourite stop for a coffee overlooking the paddock grrrr

Any idea where the Giraffe is coming from? Good news that the new bull has finally arrived :)

Any news on the pregnant pygmy hippo ?

According to the Zoo's Facebook page (last updated this morning) She's still holding on for now!

The website says that the Kingdom of the Wild should be re-opening this weekend.

Venus is still pregnant but due really any day now. Fingers crossed as its her first calf. Yes the Kingdom of the wild building will be opening sometime over the weekend. It was only closed yesterday and today, and maybe tomorro morning. Does anyone have any idea as to how large this male rhino is, or is he still a juvenile?

Great news indeed!:D

Presumeably they are going to want to breed with him too? Well I'm sure looking foward to seeing him.

Good news! :D
I can't wait to see him on sunday. I'm hoping he'll be in the paddock with the other 4 but not sure if he'll be allowed in with Zamba. I'll also try to find out his name.
Hoping that there may be a baby Hippo too! :)

I'm hoping he'll be in the paddock with the other 4 but not sure if he'll be allowed in with Zamba.

Highly unlikely- he's likely to scrap with the females at first while he establishes his position- they won't risk the little calf getting hurt. I think you'll find they mix him with the other females first.

OK, after visiting today I can say that I'm pretty sure that he has not arrived yet. The house was closed for another reason which I will say when I post my report in the Colchester Zoo Update thread :)

Brilliant news :D Hope the house is open on Tuesday as they could still close the bottom off :D and we could get a nose from the ramp !! And I do like my coffee stop lol

I haven't been able to get to Colchester for months so looking forward to it :D (visiting not the cardboard coffee :p (actually not bad fairtrade coffee) )

Great news re the new male rhino - little Zamba is soooo cute!! Was one of the other females pregnant via AI?

Bet the baby pigmy hippo is a cutie too!! Roll on my visit after Xmas - I'm doing my Half Day with the Keeper that I won at the Orangutan Evening auctions! Can't wait!!:) Can't wait to see my Rajy adoption plaque as well - hope it gets a good spot! I adopted him on my birthday which was Orange Orangutan Day too! :):)

What are the names of the rhinos living in Colchester?

Flossie (f) (very elderly and lived at Colchester since the 1970's)

Emily and Cynthia both came from South Africa in 2003. In October 2009 Cynthia had a male calf by AI named Zamba. Zamba's father Simba was very elderly and put down in April 2009 due to age related health problems.

:(As I understand it ... one of us (ROZ viz the earlier posting) is claiming the rhino may not have arrived yet.

I do not mind anyone posting HOT news, but I like it to be somewhat correct ... if I may say so.

Several folks have now enthousiastically posted remarks on the HOT news, which may or may not be true ...? So, what is ??? :(

Zamba's father Simba was very elderly and put down in April 2009 due to age related health problems.

So 'Simba' and 'Flossie' were the original pair at Colchester which used to live roughly where the Gelada Baboons now are?
