Danish News

Major breeding news

Here are two major breeding news from the Danish zoos:

Odense Zoo
A caribbean manatee was born in Odense Zoo on June 2nd. The mother was imported from Guyana and this is the fifth young born at the zoo since 2001. Unfortunately, two of those were stillbirths, but Odense Zoo has already proved to be major contributers to the European manatee population.

Randers Tropical Zoo
Bushmasters breed! The pair of South American bushmasters in Randers Tropical Zoo have laid their first batch of eggs. Bushmasters are from the rainforest in South America and are the heaviest poisonous snakes in the world and can be seen in only two zoos in Europe (Randers and Cologne).
Randers received their pair for a newly built exhibit in 2007 and the two snakes have now bred for the first time ever in Europe. The only other zoo in the world to have bred bushmasters is Dallas Zoo.

Breedings and future plans

Copenhagen Zoo
  • A new female red panda has arrived at the zoo. Hopefully she and the male currently living in the enclosure will prove to be an efficient breeding pair.
  • The flamingoes are at it again and laying several eggs.
  • Copenhagen Zoo has briefly mentioned its future plans. The first project will be a large walkthrough aviary for caribbean flamingoes, scarlet ibis, roseate spoonbills and black-necked stilts, among others. The second will be the Arctic Ring exhibit for polar bears and the third will be a major renovation/extension to the grottos and exhibits for brown bears and grey wolves. The aviary is set to be complete in 2011, the Artic Ring in 2012 and the new nordic section in 2013.

Ree Park - Ebeltoft Safari.
  • The arctic wolves have bred for the first time in Ree Park since their arrival in 2006. They share their exhibit with a group of American black bears and now both species have bred in their massive enclosure.
  • The new lions are now well settled in Ree Park and their new exhibit is due to open on June 13th. The exhibit is centered around a kopje and is very large. You can see a few small pictures of it here.

Where can I read more about these projects that I look so very much forward to, Toddy? I can´t seem to find anything about them on the zoo´s web site.

@Dan: You can't, unfortunately. All that have been revealed so far about the polar bear exhibit I have posted on this site already in the "Arctic Ring" thread.

I know a little something about the original 1999 Masterplan for the Bear Grottos: All the grottos were meant to be combined and expanded backwards towards the outer perimeter of the zoo. The bears would then be able to climb on top of the rocks. The wolves would have their exhibit expanded with about 100 % out towards the Frederiksberg Gardens if the permission could be granted.
But these plans are old and I am not sure if the situation has changed since then.

The aviary is to be situated in the little marsh exhibit where the white storcks currently live in the summertime, as well as including some of the forrested area around it.

Manatee twins born in Odense Zoo.

Great news from Odense Zoo everyone! Today (June 30th.) a pair of manatee twins was born in Odense Zoo, Denmark. This has only happened once before in Europe (Beuval, 2003).
Now eight manatees lives in Odense, two of them being previous offspring and three of them born within the last month. There are so many babies in the pool now that sometimes even their mothers gets them mixed up:p
This means that Odense Zoo is slowly becomming a true breeding factory for manatees in Europe with five healthy babies born since 2003 and two stillbirths.

Newsflash

Cakes in the oven?
The two female elephants Kungrao and Surin have been mated by the bull Chieng Mai in Copenhagen Zoo. If the breedings are successfull Copenhagen Zoo will once again have baby elephants by 2011.

Zorro moves to Germany
The six-year old male manatee "Zorro" has just moved from Odense Zoo to Nürnberg Zoo. Zorro was the first manatee born in Odense Zoo back in 2003 but now the zoo has bred so many manatees that space was becomming an issue (even though the pool is quite large). Odense Zoo had eight manatees prior to Zorros departure and three of those were born in 2009. The remaining seven are still doing fine in their spacious pool.

Polar bear cubs in Aalborg died
On November 29th two little polar bear cubs were born in Aalborg Zoo. Their mother Malik is young and born in Aalborg herself. The two cubs were her first. Unfortunately, they did not survive more than three days. This is often the case with first-time mothers in this species and hopefully things will look better next year. The 1 year old polar bear cub born in Aalborg last year is still doing fine.

"The River of the 1000 phallus symbols"
Randers Tropical Zoo is currently rebuilding its Asian Dome. The dome will become a copy of part of the Kbal Spean river around Angkor in Cambodia. Kbal Spean is also known as "The River of the 1000 phallus symbols" because of the carvings in the rocks there.

White lions in Denmark
The first white lions in Denmark has arrived. Surprisingly not to Naestved Zoo but another small Danish zoo: Blaavand Zoo. The lions are a sibling pair from "a zoo in Belgium" and already have their exhibit ready for them.

That can only be Olmense Zoo.

What is the current status of white rhinos at Knuthenborg Safari?
The male Otto has been transferred out to Colchester ...
Who is the remaining breeding male (is he established)? Are their 2 females mated and pregnant now (1 female had a stillbirth or dead calf last year)?

They have an onager pair. Is the female pregnant?

Unfortunately, news do not travel easily from Knuthenborg Safari so I cannot answer any of your questions. I did not even know that Otto had been transfered. All I know is that Knuthenborg now keeps 1.2 white rhinos that all came from Kruger National Park.

Only holding for Scandinavia! Thanks for the update on the rhinoes. I already knew that Ree Park would be getting black rhinos as the only ones in Scandinavia but I didn't know where they were comming from. Copenhagen Zoo used to keep them many years ago but they have not been in Denmark for a long time.

Ree Park are also getting red river hogs (also the only ones in Scandinavia) as well as warthogs and steller's sea eagles in 2010.

New for 2010

Thought it was time to give you the updates of what is new for the Danish zoos in these early months of 2010.

Copenhagen Zoo
A large part of the zoo is now a construction site for the new Arctic Ring (2012) and flamingo aviary (2011). The gibbons have therefore moved from their island home to The World of Primates where they inhabit the exhibit formerly used by the ruffed lemurs.

Odense Zoo
The new giant aviary in Odense is working intentionally. The pelicans are enjoying being able to fly and hopefully the flamingos will follow once their feathers are grown out again. Odense have also received a new female amur tiger from Ostrava Zoo and hopes to breed this species in the future.

Givskud Zoo
New for Givskud Zoo in 2010 is a couple of Kirk's dik-diks.

Aalborg Zoo
The male polar bear Felix left the zoo this april. He was on a breeding loan from Nürnberg Zoo and breeding he did indeed. Since his arrival in 2008 he has fathered three cubs of which, unfortunately, only one survived. It is hoped that he managed to get one of the females pregnant again before his depature so that Aalborg Zoo can continue the success in december.

Randers Tropical Zoo
2010 has so far been a good breeding year for the primates in Randers. So far the white-faced sakis, eastern black-and-white colobus monkeys and pileated gibbons have all produced healthy young. Especially the pileated gibbon is very important for the EEP.

Ree Park
As always Ree Park can boast several new species and exhibits for the new season. The biggest news in 2010 are the black rhinos that are the only ones in Scandinavia and will come on display during the summer. The rhinos will live on the huge savannah with the other African hoofstock. Other new species in Ree Park are the red river hogs (also only ones in Scandinavia), warthogs, raccoons and steller's sea eagles in the largest eagle aviary in northern Europe.

Scandinavian Wild Animal Park
The Scandinavian Wild Animal Park have expanded their collection of native wildlife with an exiting new species: musk oxen. The musk oxen have received a brand new exhibit near the polar bears.

Knuthenborg Safaripark
Knuthenborg have opened a new drive-through exhibit called "Wolf Woods" where visitors can drive in their own cars among a pack of arctic white wolves.

Gorilla pole-vaults over wall

Today a young gorilla from Givskud Zoo managed to escape from the enclosure by pole-vaulting over a four meter tall wall. The gorilla in question was Kidodo, a ten year old male. Apparently, he managed to break of a large branch of one of the dead trees in the enclosure and then use it to pole-vault over the wall. Some of the gorillas have been seen practizing this technique but no one believed they could actually do it. Kidodo was only out of the enclosure for an hour before he was caught and sedated. It is thought that his sudden displeasure with the enclosure has come because of the introduction of a new female from Heidelberg Zoo causing some disturbance, meaning that he had to be separated from the group.

Are you okay with other users posting news in this thread if you should happen to be away from Zoochat or something?
I'm signed up for practically all newsletters in Danish Zoo and I get news from time to another that might be of interest.

Do you know the name of the new female from Heidleberg?

Also what's happened to the young male now- is he seperated or back in the group now?

In Kattegatcentret, the female harbour seal "Liv" has given birth to a young cub. To celebrate that, you can bring four guests at half the price if you're a season pass holder. In Kattegatcentret, you could also see an electric eel being dissected. Quite a rare show.

The Danish organization "Kræftens Bekæmpelse" (Denmark's biggest illness-related organization that seeks to fight cancer) currently has a campaign named "Turn down the sun" to prevent skin neoplasms which are getting increasingly more common. Several Danish zoos, among these Givskud Zoo and Denmark's Aquarium, participate in the campaign and show how animals are affected by sunlight.

In Odense Zoo, there are youngs at African spoonbills, cattle egrets, kangaroos and sea lions. Soon also king penguins and gentoo penguins.

Mods - can we please add Knuthenborg Safari to the Danish forums :)
