Twycross Zoo Orangutans

Djambe never bred- but it probably wasn't her fault. She was acquired by Twycross to replace their original Sumatran female 'Trudie' and although their adult Sumatran male Toby regularly mated with her, he appeared to be infertile. (It was proved trudie's babies were fathered by the Bornean male next door!) After Toby died Djambe was surplus to Twycross and they let her join Rajang at Colchester. Of course he's been vasectomised due to his hybrid status. Djambe was from a well-represented line so no importance was attached to breeding from her.

Having read the book 'Molly's Zoo' quite recently the Orangs were quite a big part in the book.
Mainly focussing on the story of the very accidental hybridation! I think this was the first occurance that this had happened a succesfull mating through a fence which happened more than once?

I think it has happened in several zoos worldwide in the past- occassionally with Gorillas too. In the Twycross case I think the female Trudie mated with both her Sumatran mate 'Toby' and also with the Bornean male 'Jod'- through the mesh division in the indoor cages. But Toby was infertile so Jod sired her babies. Two of them and a young pure Bornean(also fathered by Jod) were later sent to La Palmyre in France and allowed to breed. Only later on were the offspring karyotyped and that is how the two from Trudie were discovered to be hybrids. I think her first baby, also hybrid, 'Scooper' went to Chester.

After this they put plexiglass screening over the mesh!

I guess some of you would like to know

You can watch ex-Twycross Satu on

http://www.rozhlas.cz/therelatives/portal/

New project similar to the previous The Revealed with Prague gorillas, now The Relatives with orangutans of Dvur.

I should add that the exhibition is new for them as they have been transported into new exposition in reconstructed pavillion. They moved Elmar the male and Žaneta the other female first and the rest two Satu and little Besar are not transported yet. So you may not spot Satu at first for a while, on the other hand you should be able to see her very first minutes in the new place. (reason for this is to give Elmar and Žaneta mate in privacy i.e. without the last offspring Besar; and to strenghten Besar's independence a bit)

Many thanks for the link. It is very interesting and it's good to be able to see how Satu is getting on. I think I read somewhere that she is pregnant. Is that right?

Never heard of that, probably false so far. She and Elmar mated in March, no mention of pregnancy as much as I know. If I run into some additional info I would post it here.

(while searching for info I just learned that the project has some hilarious problems at the beginning while orang-utans disassembled cameras during test broadcasting, lol)

Brilliant! I love hearing about orangutans outwitting humans! Perhaps they wanted to use the cameras themselves, like Nonja at Schonbrunn who is taking photos for her Facebook page :)

There are discussions on the Dvur Kralove threads about their imminent departure from the EAZA. Has anyone heard whether Satu will be returning to Twycross as a result of this?

For people who can't read Czech (no insult or racist remark meant by this) I have a translated version

The female was born in Satu Twycross Zoo, where he specialized in the breeding of primates, 31 August 1999. Her parents are male and female Theodore Batu. In the company of parents and younger siblings lived into their Tamu seven years, into adulthood. In December 2006, was first observed mating with her father Batumi. This is repeated many times, in 2007 and 13 gravid Satu December 2007 gave birth to first baby, but unfortunately dead. To fertilization own father repetition, veterinarians began serving Satu oral contraceptive Microgynon, commonly used in human medicine. It is clear that further living together in a group with his own father will not be possible. Therefore coordinator breeding orangutans bornejských recommended discontinuation of contraception and to move Satu Zoo Dvur Kralove, which arrived 13th February 2009. Just in March, was associated with male Elmar, who began her mate. Satu but not pregnant and Elmar was moved to a new exhibition pavilion in the world of the female bird inflammation. Then napářil successfully and the baby was born on 13 11th 2010th

Before the birth Žaneta Elmar moved back to Satu, in which he remained until Wednesday of that week. Mating was not observed in them, but breeders know that is probably pregnant Satu. The actual birth was a surprise for everyone. Expected date of birth that determines the orangutans very difficult, should be much later and neither male Elmar nothing "did not report." He had all his former partner was in the higher stages of pregnancy very uncomfortable and had to be several months before birth separated. The coexistence Satu But even in the last week no problems appeared.

The second surprise was the site of delivery, which began in the enclosure around the fourteenth hour. Zoologist Ing. Zdenek Jeřábková recalled: "Orangutans are born mostly at night and hiding in the dark places. Satu has not run its very happy and feel very safe in it. When she was after his arrival to the zoo discharged into the enclosure for the first time, the whole week did not want to go back to internal exposure. Breeders are worried about it then, but she was completely satisfied. At the present time, although after each walk back home regularly, but still like to run, so it did not bother about it and give birth. "

Birth takes place in the presence of males in the sight of visitors and with real-time photographer Mr. Jaroslav Benda from Trutnov to Dvur Kralove nad Labem, and unique photographs.

That's good news! Does anyone know why she put the baby on her head? I heard of an orang at Jersey giving birth outside and doing that.

She looks a bit inexperienced to me- placenta and umbilical cord still attatched, and putting the baby in an inappropriate place(on her head). Hopefully she will quickly get the hang of it though.

Well, i thought everyone is internet savvy enought to run it through google translate (just few clicks).

So far, I heard she is doing very well for first time mother, Fingers crossed, of course.

She's keeping hold of it, always a good sign. Putting it down, away from her body, then is the time to worry I think...

She's mother-reared and saw her mother give birth and care for her sister so hopefully all will be well.

Cannot we move this discussion to Dvur Kralove CZECH REPUBLIC threads since it only reflects fleetingly on Twycross and the actual birth and all took place in Dvur in a completely refurbed orang house ... :(
