Latest news from Marwell is that the new female Amur leopard, Kaia, has arrived and that my favourite Amur tiger, Zambar, is leaving the collection for Blackpool Zoo in January 2010. Please see details below.

Big Cat Changes

Heh, just about to report that till I saw this thread. Zambar is one of my favourite characters at the zoo and my ZooChat namesake, and he is very much a miracle of a tiger: Despite being rejected by his mum Yenna after she fractured his leg, he was healed and handraised by the keepers till they dared to mix him with his father Gamin. But suprisingly, the two got on great, and Zambar proved to be very respecting towards his Dad. But what was more risky was mixing Zambar with Marwell's other geriatic, unrelated male Ivan (RIP); the fact he was Gamin's arch nemesis also didn't help! But, miraculously, Ivan accepted him perfectly.
Zambar's still an overgrown cub at heart; still as cheeky and playful as he was when he was raised by the keepers. I'll have to spend a lot of time down at the tiger enclosure in my latest visits, I will definately miss that tiger. :(

And great to hear Kaia has arrived: Can't wait to see her on Sunday (if she's on show).

Good news all round then, but a slight shame that they're losing a great Tiger. I think, I may be wrong, but he is the Tiger that has, on a couple of occasions jumped up against the window and succeeds in taking my breath away in complete awe. How many Tigers will this leave at Marwell, and who is in what side, out of interest?

It says on the website that Zambar is to be paired with the female from Whipsnade, i wonder if they plan on breeding them, how old is the female from Whipsnade anyway?

Yes, this is something Zambar does quite often :)

It will leave his parents, Gamin and Yenna, who are together in the adjoining enclosure to his (the larger side).

Whipsnade's female is called Anastasia and is around 7 or 8 years old.

As Gamin and Yenna are no longer breeding, I do hope they can find a new breeding pair to live in Zambar's patch once he leaves. :)

Isn't Zambars enclosure a little small for a new breeding pair? If I was Marwell, I'd cut down the fence and make it back into one large enclosure again. Maybe bring in a new breeding pair, if possible.

Zanbar's enclosure is certainly capable of holding a large capacity of tigers well; Yenna and the three cubs she had in October 2004 lived in there for a long time, and remember before the 2001 redevelopment Marwell's tiger enclosure was split in three, meaning all enclosures were about that size; and they still bred successfully. And Marwell could easily switch a breeding pair into the larger enclosure with Gamin and Yenna in the smaller one if they so wished.
