Hey everyone,

I'm currently in Kuala Lumpur, and i do hope to go to zoo negara and find out more about:
1. that incident involving a man climbing into an exhibit and interacting with the animals.
and 2. apparently they keep the world's largest captive python a recticulated one.

not sure if i can go though,

but I'm going to singapore as well later on and almost certainly will go to Singapore and Jurong bird park.

later on Kuching, Malaysia if I'm lucky I'll get admission to the orangutan sanctuary.

- wish me luck in attending these places, ;)

I would rather you do a general review of Zoo Negara and current conservation education and breeding programmes. :)

Elephants, gaur, langurs, gibbons, orangs, sambar, Malayan tapir, clouded leopard, small felids ... the list continues.

What about the cash funding for the zoo ..., is it sufficient for general maintenance, quality zoo animal management. Husbandry standards, keeper training ....

Well, the list is rather long ... ;)

sorry I can't go to zoo negara but i will efinately go to Jurong bird park and most hopefully singapore zoo.
 
I visited Zoo Negara on my 27th birthday last year and enjoy every bit of it. Yes, parts of it are worse than others, but name me one zoo that does not have those. I arrived around 10.00 in the morning and left at 21.00 in the evening, the zoo has late hours on some days and fortunately my day was one of them. I needed every bit of those 11 hours, the area is huge!
 
I gather from your posts that your parents aren't all that into animals, but you should try to get them to take you to Bako National Park when you get to Sarawak, even if its just for the day. Its a fantastic place, and you can very easily see proboscis monkeys there in the wild (as well as lots of other animals). In my opinion a far preferable outing than to Semenggoh.
 
Definatly try and get to bako it is an amazing place and if you can could you get a photo of the silver langur troop that hangs around the buildings you may even see the clumsy little baby i saw a couple of months ago!:)

and semenggoh orangutan sanctuary is fantastic aswell!

I think almost every Malaysian zoo has started extending opening hours till night (mostly on Fridays and Saturdays) to cash in on "night safaris".

Hope you make it to the trinity (zoo, bird park and night safari)! :)

And don't bother going to the temporary Hollywood Dinos attraction on at the Bird Park now. Its run by some commercial events company and it looks really awful and cheaply set-up. A great waste of Billings' animatronic dinosaurs.
 
got quite a few photos of hornbills but unfortunately of poor quality as they were in bad position and of my camera quality.

The hornbills are magnificent! I got to see my favourite the rhinocerous and 3 subspecies of them were kept in jurong. The male sulawesi was right in front of the cage, we wasn't bothered by anything not even children trying to poke it. the bird show was great espicially the commentary, the keepers here as i remember have always been so friendly to the point it is scary.
All the hornbills are paired to breed as one male and one female. There is one subspecies that i can't remember that has eggs currently. The public nest monitors were also very nice to watch.
the crested cranes in the waterfall aviary were roaming right next to the path and were feeding on some fruits. I was pecked quite badly but one woman, the crane grabbed hold of her skin and it unfortunately was bleeding badly, and they usually this defensive even when unprovoked?

there was a strange young man that followed me around the hornbill area. qouting " hey there's lizard on top of the cage" "would you like to see this one?" "and "there are only two cause there going to make eggs"

I didn't even open my mouth and he was talking to me. he was caucasian and young about in 20's then i was wondering zoochat member? but I never actually asked.



I unfortunately only spent 2 and a half hours there, much less than i wanted. I will upload photos when i get back to australia.

Sorry MARK my auntie can only get me into singapore zoo and Chawang the magnificent bull elephant is located at Night safari. I would of loved to see him myself.

I'm going to Kuching tommorrow, but will come back to singapore in a week's time. Hopefully then I can report some encounters with orangutans! ( i hope)
 
visited singapore zoo today two unfortunate incidents my camera SD card reached max capacity and since it wasn't mine i couldn't delete any photos to clear space, didn't gets as much shots as I hoped and the rain caused me to leave early.
I had no chance to ask about night safari elephants about whether Sri Utama is still alive or not and where and when Sang Wira is moving house. the keepers were bombarded by young children and they left before i got to go over.

Good news though Singapore will recieve Giant Pandas in 2012!!!
