Twycross Zoo Twycross Orangutan moves.

Someone posted that several of the younger Orangutans at Twycross are being moved in order to free up space..

Does anyone know yet where they are going. Could it be CHester, who are probably in line to receive more animals now?

What sexes are the young Twycross animals- I think mostly female?

I heard that Theodora and her youngest daughter, Tamu, are going to Cologne while her elder daughter, Satu, is going to Paris.

I nearly forgot - they are looking for a home for Kibriah's son, Tiga. That would just leave Maliku's daughter, Miri.
 
at the moment the orangutans they have got is batu a adult male , 3 adult females maliku , theodora and kibriah and there offspring - satu , tamu and miri girles and tiga male - at the moment theodra and tamu are off to colgone and satu off to paris however tiga has not been planned to be moved yet but the zoo needs to find a replacment zoo before he mates with mum and half siter which would not be good - so in the long run the orangutans left at twycross are batu , maliku , miri and kibriah

Okay, thanks. I've now realised that Theodora is another daughter of(Jersey) Giles. So Gigit and Theodora were halfsisters(dif. mothers) as is Maliku( dif.father- Batu) Its complicated...

It is good news that finally some Borneans are moving from Twycross. Koeln Zoo has been looking to add a few younger females to their current group of 3.3 (which has been ageing a little). Also Paris Zoo could do with another female for theirs.

Now this will free up vital space for new youngsters to the remaining 3 females! :)
 
Tamu has written on the Paignton Peacocks thread that Theodora and her daughter Tamu are leaving for Paris shortly. On an emotional level, I find this sad having got to know them, and feel for Theo's elder daughter, Satu, who has never been apart from them. I realise that the Orangutan House is too small so something has to be done, but wonder why Twycross don't use some of the money they have earmarked for public facilities on improving the lot of their animals. The gorilla houses are practically empty at the moment, so couldn't they turn one into an orangutan exhibit?

Yes, you have a point there... at this particular time, they could amalgamate the Gorillas(apart from Joe) into one group. Unfortunately this might be too radical a move for Twycross....
I'm afraid over the years I've come to take a rather dim view of Twycross's longterm management policies, particularly the Gorillas and Elephants, where valuable animals are left unbred- apparently because its simpler just to leave things that way...:(

For the Orangs that are scheduled to leave, there isn't much alternative, as they are badly overcrowded at present.
 
Moving them temporary to the new gorilla house would be a good idea, but i cant see them doing any imptovement to the existing closure let alone building a bigger one.

The enclosure is bare, and recently a climbing frame was added after fundraising by a member of the public who loves orangutans. I woinder how long they stayed couped up inside while it was built?

Yes alot the zoo needs upgrading but the orangutans are in desperate need.
 
I have confirmed information that Theodora (Female Bornean) and her almost three year old female infant (Father Batu) are to be transferred to PARIS on Tuesday 27th November. Theodora's firstborn, Satu (female approximately 8 years old)) is to be moved to Cologne, probably in the new year. A place has yet to be found for Tiga (male Bornean - parents Kibriah/Batu) who is an entertaining subadult of around 7 years. Their transfer will ease the problem of overcrowding since the building of a once promised ,new orang enclosure appears to be way on the horizon of priorities. This will leave two breeding females (Kibriah and her daughter Maliku) and Maliku's infant Miri as well as the male Batu who is father to all the infants for the last eight or nine years.

I believe on the website it said they had raised several thousand pounds specifically to renovate the outdoor enclosure with new climbing equipment etc. I wonder if it was really all spent on that? I haven't seen the orangutan enclosure since the changes so I don't know how much equipment has been added and can't judge... Anyone?

I believe the work was done within one week in June(by Army volunteers) so they weren't shut indoors too long.

Twycross have been almost too successful with the Orangutans, but they haven't planned any future new accomodation- hence this sudden rather drastic reduction. Personally I think it is the only sensible option for them and the remaining animals will be better off. Its a completely different 'spin' to the Gorilla and Elephant stories...

The best thing I can say about the Twycross Ape enclosures generally is that the outsides are good for photography....

Well offcourse they are when there completely bare, just grass and little climbing oportunities.

If would be nice to see them try some planting even if the apes just pull them up, its not money wasted if the get enrichment from pulling them up instead of playing with cardboard boxes:mad:

Yes, what I meant was it was the ONLY good thing about their enclosures- mainly because of the glass viewing panels.

They did put in a couple of little clumps of bamboo in the 2nd Gorilla enclosure but I was amazed otherwise at how simplistic it was, just like the others. Also I've always hated the 'cardboard box' syndrome too- the indoor cages are full of 'rubbish' for them to play with but it just looks a horrible mess, and the apes STILL look bored to death- I genuinly think those gorillas are mostly unhappy animals...:( Regarding Apes, Twycross just don't seem to have any VISION. And those awful chimpanzee enclosures near the house- they wouldn't look out of place in a 'third world' zoo- they should have been demolished years ago and all the old pairs of chimps turned into a single group... its perfectly possible to do.
 
Its really sad to see such social creatures (chimps) kept this way, if they wont house them as a group or cant afford to build a new enclosure, why not suggest talking to monkey world about taking some?

One of the things i couldn't believe is all the indoor area's are tiled, seems a stange as tiles dont retain heat well!

Lets hope chester zoo build a new gorilla house, with the recent new development am sure it will be modern and adhere to these fantastic animals needs.

I dont see how they can still be part of breeding programmes when they dont adhere to the guidlines.

It's been a long time since i last visited...

on a side note, I was pretty shocked at Twycross' giraffe paddock.
 
Yes alot has been said regarding the ape accomodation at Twycross. Personally, I feel 4 ape species is definitely overkill. Keep the bonobos and orang utans as these are successfully maintained and bred and build them better accomodation soonest.

A question mark remains hovering over the gorillas. If Twycross really now make a move on with a young new silverback for the younger females and start a breeding group .. a big YES. Otherwise, send them all out on breeding loan elsewhere.

And I second that we - taun, Pertinax and all the rest of us - petition Twycross Zoo as a positive action to do something drastic about the Twycross ape accomodation inside and outside wise! :D :rolleyes:

If the damn management can afford to build a new visitor center at 11 million pounds, why can not they fund new decent and state of the art ape accomodation!

Take it to the max, people!
