I'll kick off this thread with the news that somewhere in the last two weeks a giant otter was born at Duisburg Zoo. It's the first offspring of their newly formed pair :)

Allthough we might need some more founders and institutions in the future, at the moment things are looking pretty good for the giant otter in Europe!

Great news . I know that Duisburg has held Giant Otters for a very long time . I remember seeing them in a very small enclosure years ago . Have they bred them before ?

New in January 2010:
The zoo keeps now 1,1 echidnas, both came from Rotterdamzoo.
They live together with Timboyok-treekangaroos and kookaburras.

Timboyok-Treekangaroos ? What's that ? As far as I know, Duisburg has kept Matschie-treekangaroos, but lost them in 2008.

Never heared that name for Goodfellow-Treekangaroos before, but Its good, Duisburg got again Treekangaroos. I hope, they will get a not related male to the female, but this is very hard in europe.

@Charly: Maybe you should look more often into the zootierliste ;)

As far as I know, two animals were imported for Krefeld and Dortmund. Frankfurt isn't breeding the species since many years. It would be worth an attempt, to mate him with the female at Duisburg. But I don't know, how close he is related to this female.

Digging this thread up with a smile, because after the birth of a giant otter apparantly at the end of 2009 (which turned out female btw), three more youngsters have been born very recently!

It's looking good with the numbers in Europe, which are on the extreme increase recently! We'll need some more founders soon though...

As well as the conversion of the old polar bear enclosure for a group of mandrill

QUOTE=Deviant*Strain;370621]Sorry for bumping a thread. Has anyone seen Baby the Boto recently?[/QUOTE]

Yes saw him on last weekend (my first time) and what an experience - comparable only to the first time I saw Torgamba the Sumatran Rhino at Port Lympne.....

Great zoo too. :)

Do any regular visitors to Duisberg know how the female gorilla Momo is doing? or have any recent photographs of her? I used to enjoy seeing her in while she was at Edinburgh Zoo.

Someone I know visited recently and Momo is still there, part of the group that includes male Mapema and two other females. But Momo is the only one that hasn't bred- i think she must be infertile.
