Crowned Sifaka in Europe

Just a couple of questions regarding the Crowned Sifaka (Propithecus coronatus) in Europe...

According to ISIS the current population in European Zoo's is 12:3

1) Are any of the 3 females (at Belfast, Besancon, Apenheul) pregnant?

2) Is there a chance of some unrelated females being wild caught and becoming part of the European breeding program any time soon?

What you`ve posted sounds about right think atleast one female maybe pregnant,don`t think there is much chance of new blood being brought think this species is on a slow decline.

I take it that the female they were handrearing at either Mulhouse or Besancon zoo's last year or the year before didn't make it? I never heard anymore on her.

I believe it didn`t and I think it was at Besancon zoo's,as Mulhouse is past breeding age.

How many can Belfast hold before they reach capacity? They have 2:0 + breeding pair. Are there any plans to move either of the surplus males on?

Not a clue,but I do know Cotswold have agreed to hold surplus males

Don't know but the the female of Apenheul gave birth to her son Daholo on February 4, 2009. Normally the birth interval for sifakas is 1 to 1.5 years...

Our female at Belfast gave birth to a full term stillborn male young last month. Which was very sad news for their keepers and the programme. Fingers crossed for next year. Our group to my knowledge get on very well and I dont know of any plans to move on any animals. I believe the programme would rather a few zoos hold larger numbers than spreading the animals around as they dont travel well.
