Colchester Zoo Colchester Zoo news 2010 #1

Went to Colchester Zoo today.

This barbeque thing near the cafatiear looks very big (not sure if zoos should encourage big meat-eating lol) the old meercat enclosure is being demolished.

Rajang was looking at the people in the main indoor area he put his hand right infront of the glass at me!:D Tiga was outside patroling his enclosure. On a bad note most of the "forest" has now died but hopefully soon more plants will grow and it will become a real "forest";):rolleyes:.

The tiny reptile house adjacent to the cherry crowned mangabeys is also going to be demolished.

I think Tanya is now with Tembo as I'd heard that they were planning to breed from her. Zamba was was outside but a zebra was chasing him and I mean really going for it!

Finally I was pleasently surprised by how many penguins they had today there were 13 in the older pool and 15 in the newer pool. Also there were 8 or 9 red river hogs.
 
@Goretex- has the binturong enclosure next to the old meerkat one been demolished or will it be demolished?
Also the small reptile house, snakes and lizards, did it say it was going to be demolished :confused: or was this a guess? I hoped they were going to refurbish it tbh :rolleyes:

Yes indeed the old bintrong enclosure is demolished. As for the tiny reptile house it said it was up for redevelopment so I'm assumeing it will be demolished although I can't think what will be replaceing it.
 
Does anyone know why its taking them so long????:confused: From what I've seen it looks very good.
 
And another thing what about this new tropical exhibit?

On the website they seem to just have what they origanally said but are there any problems here?

On my last visit the yellow bellied storks were offshow as they aren't supposed to be kept in cold conditions? And the birds that were housed adjacent to them seem to have left and their cage is now empty? (no visitor access)

Does anyone know anything to do with why its taking them so long to demolish that area?????:confused: Zoo Leopard?
 
Not too sure why it's taking so long but I think that the problem could be with finding the Storks new homes, whether this be at another collection, or putting them in another enclosure :rolleyes:. I think that they could go in the enclosure which Sayan the Leopard is in, or the old fossa enclosure for a while when it warsm up a bit? :confused:
I'm also baffled as to what has happened to ZooLeopard as I cant find him in the member list, nor has he been posting recently? :confused:
 
On the topic of new enclosures, did I imagine it or at some point last year, did someone say in another thread that the chimps' outdoor area was going to be improved and extended this winter ? Obviously there's no sign of this happening at all and it's now February !
 
I put about that on the orang utan evening post as that is what one of the keepers told me ??? Had forgotten all about that lol maybe it was the weather or the baby that put it off who knows ???
 
I was also thinking about this extension mentioned the other day.
Leopards at Ussuri Falls is now open, with Milena being given access to the new area, and the official opening being on 27th March. Hopefully I might get to do something with the leopards on my keeper for the day next week :D
 
Well at least I'm not going senile and imagining things due to wishful thinking ! Will have to try and nab a keeper next week and ask what's happening ...... have a good time with the leopards !
 
Enjoy your day Roz if you are doing it Wednesday I might see you being harassed by meerkats as the last lot I saw doing their keepers for the day were lol

Be very good if you get a sneaky peek at the in and outs of the new enclosure! :D

Hopefully this year will be another good one for Colchester, with new developments started and hopefully planning for the tropical realm sorted (at last), a new baby (fingers crossed female) elephant who either way is the start of a new herd with new genes in the pool :p.
The nature trail hopefully completed giving a different view to the tigers (unless they board that up lol) and some other sort of Essex wildlife to see :rolleyes:
Not forgetting the bar b q area lol :confused: tut more torment for the veggies :eek: (although when we rarely eat at the zoo I would recommend the quorn wraps by the lake (if not somewhat pricey)) :)

Any news on the chimps would be good news to

Yes I am doing it Wednesday so you may well see me being harrassed- what do you mean by this?
I too am looking forward to these developments, also not forgetting the small mammal area redevelopment !
 
They were trying to clean out the meerkat enclosure with the meerkats joining in and getting in the way lol very sweet seeing the babies running about sticking their noses in everywhere

The old fossa enclosure would seem the most obvious home for them.

Also regarding the chimps I certainly hope they do soon improve their facility. Seeing as the most obvious area to extend their exhibit would be into the lhost's monkey's enclosure and also the enclosure nearby which I can't think what that area houses. But it would be a shame to lose the lhost monkeys so how about them rebuilding the area where Sayan the Leopard and the capuchin monkeys are for them????:confused: Surely more interesting than the dull Austrailian exhibit of which I'm sure I heard they were planning for that area.

I'd be eager to hear what you lot think about my little plan please tell me if there are any flaws in it.;)

I don't think they should be messing about with the l'Hoests at the moment - they're breeding where they are and this species needs all the breeding it can get. I say leave them where they are and let them get on with it (ahem!).

They are doing very well from this pair- but the enclosure is becoming a bit on the small side for the expanding group. I don't think moving them to roomier quarters (if available) would have any bad effect.

You're probably right - but I'd like to think if they were putting them through the disruption (however minor) of the move then it would be for their benefit not just the chimps'. ;)
