It's just Marmot Mania but with the prairie marmots replaced by Dwarf Mongooses.

Just confirmed on the website that african hunting dogs are going to be arriving this year along with the giant otters and anteaters!!!!!!

From the Zoo's Facebook page:

The Giant Otters will be going into the Sealion enclosure once works have been completed. The Sealions are leaving the collection.

The Giant Anteaters will be housed on the paddock next to the Vicuna.

The African Painted Dogs will be going in the paddock that is currently home to the Przewalski’s horses.

Marmot Mania has become Mongoose Mania.

-------------

But I LIKE the sealions!! :(:(:(

Paddock next to the Vicuna? The long one opposite the Mini Golf?

Gonna be a brilliant year though. Looking forward to seeing all 3 new species :)

With regards to the Giant Otters for Chester . I have just been looking at the 2004 Giant Otter Studook and Husbandry manual ( on the San Diego Library website , found via Studbooks thread ) .

This very long - 270 + pages - document goes into great detail on husbandy necessities for the species . The 3 critical elements of an enclosure for successful husbandry are
- the correct land: water ration , seems about 60% land in an average enclosure, a formula is given for calculation
- provision of a soft , dry , loose natural substrate for the land area is essential for grooming and digging in
- provision of deep digging areas within the enclosure

I am sure the team at Chester have studied this document . It does seem that the Sea Lion enclosure as it now stands is nothing like how an Giant Otter enclosure should be set up , so hope we will see a lot of work on it .

I also picked up from a quick skim through some of the document that the previous pair of Giant Otters at the Chestnut Centre were fed live rainbow trout . As has been mentioned elsewhere I did not think this was allowed in the UK . Also the enclosure at the Chestnut Centre was judged to meet husbandry standards .

Encouraging to see how the species captive situation has improved in the last few years , then very few were being bred with most animals very closely related .

Any idea, which giant otters arrived at Chester??

Maybe Icana from Hamburg and Saro from Dortmund or Xingu and Tupi from Leipzig??

The male is definetly coming from Hamburg. Not sure about the female but she has now reached Chester and in quarentine until the spring. Male will join her later this year.

The males name is Jao (born 2008, Maku x Beni), the female Mandija (born 2005 at Dortmund, Rufus x Sol, arrived at Leipzig 2009)) or Tupi (born 2007 at Dortmund, Rufus x Sol, arrived at Leipzig 2009)....
