Do Animals like music?

Just seeing if anyone animals they work with like music near there enclosures because I think the Apes I work will seem to like Music on. Does anyones animals do anything different when music is on?
 
Soem animals are disturbed by it, for example okapi are very sensitive to noise (and ultrasound) and I understand one died of shock (I think in Copenhagen but it could have been somewhere in Belgium or the Netherlands) when a band or orchestra started to play in the zoo grounds.
 
That said, at Marwell, the radio is played quitely in the Okapi House all the time, which I think probably does a lot of good.
 
i know that birds love music as most breeders of small stuff like finches etc play music during the day to keep them entertained

That is correct, an okapi did die in Copenhagen some years ago, when there was a loud rock concert in the adjoining park.

Otherwise, as far as music and animals is concerned, I have read news stories about farmers claiming that milk production had been increased by playing classical music at low volume to cows.... :confused:

I've heard of this being reccommended with okapi
as constant low level background noise can help avoid a sudden and dangerous reaction when they hear an unusual or unexpected sound.
 
Many animals like quiet classical music. I even know of one British zoo who found that gorillas prefer classical music to jungle sounds played in their exhibit - and discontinued it, perhaps thinking that gorillas are supposed to like only cicadas, not Bach. ;)
 
There is some research from Belfast Queens university that suggests classical music relaxes Asian elephants, i'm know where near convinced!!!

I also found myself frozen in the okapi house once as there was an interview with Russell T Davies about an upcoming Doctor Who episode once! :p
