Edinburgh Zoo Departures in 2009

Don't know of the timescales, but 40 gentoo penguins will be leaving the zoo headed for China. This is part of the deal struck up in return for the pair of Giant Pandas which the zoo are hoping to receive in the near future

Just had a look and mongoose and red bellied lemurs online they look great cant wait to see them when they arrive :)

The 3.0 Scottish wildcats have left the zoo, their current enclosure is earmarked for redevelopment as part of the new exhibit, that is being developed for Mercedes former enclosure.

Edinburgh zoo is down to just one Siberian musk deer (according to ISIS), hope the management persevere with this species, one of my favourites at the zoo, real zoo goers treat.

The Scottish Wildcats are still at the Zoo being held in the top avaries which are still standing behind the 'construction site'. I was at the Zoo on Sunday and saw 2 of them roaming the enclosure.

Kiang, there has only been the young Musk Deer for the last few months as the male unfortunately passed away.

Not sure of the plans for this species, however they have had new signage added to the enclosure in the past few weeks (which have not been added for the Ring Tailed Lemurs or Ratel who were due to/have left the collection)

I did hear the plan was to move the musk deer up to the highland wildlife park and they fit in to the mountains and tundra theme up there : -)

Babuu the Indian Rhino will be leaving for Chester Zoo shortly. He will be bred to female Tanaya who is coming from San Diego WAP later this year :)

No Batschii is being moved to another collection because Babuu is her half brother. They were both born in 2004 at Basel and have the same father.

No. The current female is going elsewhere (Madrid). She has to leave because she and both the Edinburgh males are all related(Basel line).

Madrid Zoo will retain a pair for Blackpool Zoo.

One of both males there - they hold a bachelor group - will then have to move out elsewhere. I would presume to receiving zoo to be WSMP (which would be somewhat realistic to expect).

So let me get this straight. Lots of moves happening at the moment...

Rotterdam ship 1:0 to Beauval (France) Edinburgh then ship another 1:0 (Fanindra) to Rotterdam to replace him.

Chester move 0:1 (Batschii) to Madrid Zoo. Edinburgh then move 1:0 (Babuu) to Chester. Madrid move 1:0 to WMSP and 1:0 to Edinburgh. Madrid keep Batschii and new male until Blackpool (owned by the same group) can build a suitable exibit for them?

I'm expecting that Edinburgh will source the new 2:0 from Stuttgart (calf born August 2008) and Whipsnade (calf born 5/11/07) Can't think of any other young males around at the moment that would be old enough for a move?

It seems odd that Batschi is going from Chester to Madrid if she's going to end up 'just up the road' at Blackpool in the future, but if its not for some years yet I suppose it gives Madrid an exhibit in the meantime and the two animals can be paired while they are still young- which is often easier. But it does seem a rather convoluted move.

Do we know when in March the move will be happening?
As I am thinking it would be good to see them one last time before they move.

Babuu is supposed to be heading down here this coming week. Don't know about Fanindra though. Within days of Babuu coming to Chester Batschii will hit the road for Madrid.

It may seem odd, but as long as Madrid holds out for an Indian rhino holding capacity, it makes sense. Madrid will eventually concentrate only on southern white rhino (for which they have bred a calf by AI recently).

Blackpool is only due to start construction 2010/11 ... (though no firm date has been set).

WSMP will start as a bachelor facility - eventually replacing Madrid in the UK for this. Sadly, which other zoo on the continent would suit as bachelor capacity is still not clear.

Okay, cheers for that.
I shall think about going Tuesday and hope Babu and Fanindra are still there.

Babu leaves on Wednesday.
