Chester Zoo Need Help!!!!

on the Sumatran Orangs At chester.

I seem to have worked out quite a bit about the borneans (history, parents, grandparents, relatives etc)

But the Sumatrans are proving a bit more difficult!

Any help on the current Animals (name, Sex, History etc) and previous animals would be much appreciated.

As i am working to my own "master plan" of providng a new website full of info of orangs in UK and Aust zoos, with detailed enclosue info etc.

Ive got 3 pads filled just with the Perth zoo orangs!!!

why dont you give them a call and ask to speak to one of the keepers im sure they wont mind if you explain what you doing

Chester's orangs:(I've been looking into them for quite some time!)

Current group:

Adult male Puluh (23/9/1988)
Two adult females Subis(born 30/11/1986), and Emma(born 14/11/1987). They are full sisters and were hand reared by keepers after their mother Ramon rejected them. When they had their first young with Puluh, they were mixed with Martha and Sarikei and their young, so that they could pick up on how to look after their young.
Two babies, Budi and Utara
One Juvenile, Padang, parents emma and Puluh born 22/11/1998

Previous Sumatrans at Chester include:

Ramona
Oscar
Jambi (parents Subis and Puluh, born 23/8/1998)

Jambi went to Bucharest(or Budapest..)
Ramona came from (i think) East Berlin Zoo.
Oscar was born at Bristol Zoo(parents Henry x Anne) in 1971.
Puloh (current male) was born in Perth Zoo, Australia (parents Atjeh x Puan)
Also in the 1950's- 1970's, Chester had two Sumatran males, 'Jimmy' and 'Paul'

I've also been looking into this subject, haven't got very far yet owing to having so many other things to do. I'm attempting to identify the chimps, giraffes, elephants and orangs to subspecies level wherever possible. This information will be posted in my next update to old species at Chester.

arrived 1957 1.0 Jimmy aged 5 (died 1969) (Sumatran ?)
arrived 1958 1.0 Paul (died 1978) (Sumatran ?)
arrived 1959 0.3 Betty, Jacqueline, Josephine (probably all Bornean)

Jimmy died shortly after being moved to the new ape house. He and Paul had a fight and were seperated for a few days. A re-introduction was tried but they fought again and Jimmy received a serious bite on the hand. He stopped eating and died a day or so later.

Jimmy and Paul were definately(I'm 100% sure) Sumatran.
The three females definately Bornean.

Didn't 'Jimmy's photo feature in the same Chester Zoo News as the one you have quoted his obituary from? Its strange they had lived years together quite peaceably, but the move of quarters precipitated a falling out.

The hybrid 'Rajang' born at Chester(you'll have the date, '68) and still at Colchester was the offspring of the female 'Josephine' and one of the two males. Chester never knew which was the father but I think it was probably 'Paul.' 'Rajang', despite being a hybrid, resembles photos of 'Paul' in the shape of his face.

i dint know if this was any help to anyone
