Letch-wi is the way i've been pronoucing it. To be honest there are quite a few animal species names i'm fairly certain im pronouncing incorrectly :o

I think it is pronounced Dye-ker

Yes - dye-ker - it's from an Afrikaans word meaning 'diver' (from the way it 'dives' into cover when disturbed, as I understand it).

And I say 'Letch-wi'.

@Maguari that's right, it's is derived from the dutch verb "duiken" which means "to dive". Some other animal names, that are derived from dutch words are aardvark(earthpig), aardwolf(earthwolf), eland(dutch word for moose), hartebeest(deerbeast) and blesbok.

For some reason, in my head I've always said Le-Shoo. No idea why.

Do people pronounce Okapis: Oakapee or Ohkarpee?

@ HuxleyPig: O-Kah-Pi

@ Shirokuma: I always pronounce Fossa as it's spelt, but I think the actual Malagasy pronununciation would be more like foos-a (though given then the last syllable often isn't sounded in Malagasy, maybe it'd just be foos?)

I understand the correct pronunciation of Sifaka is Shi-fakh (again, the last syllable not being sounded).

How strange....

I've always pronounced Lechwe as 'Lech' or 'Lek' with the 'we' silent.

Also Takin......I've always said Tay-kin but I've nopticed other people say Tar-kin?

I've always said Tar-kin.

great thread. it just made me realise that i have never said some of these animals names out loud in my life!

i can't vote on the lechwe pronunciation as i have always interpreted it different again - i read "letch-weh" with the last "e" making an "eh" sound rather than an "ee"

as a kid i always said "oak-a-pie" although in adulthood that was corrected to "ock-ah-pee" (is that correct?)

i also say "dye-ker"

and "foss-sa" though i noticed in the flick madagascar they say "foos-sa"

Agreed to the above two posts.

Now here's a can of worms: Zeb-Rur or Zeeb-Rur? ;)

I go with "Letch-Way", "Dye-Ker", "Oak-Ah-Pee", "Tah-Kin" and "Zee-Bra".

I used to go 'Foss-Ah" but of late i've been influenced by the Madagascar movie and prefer "Foo-Sah".

Another name which countless folk 'massacre' is Orang Utan. Most seem to pronounce it "A-Rang-A-Tan". In Malay, which the name derives from, it is pronounced "Oh-Rung Ooh-Tarn".

'A-Rang-You-Tang' is how I've always said, but Mr Attenborough does put me down when he says it lol.
