At Gaiapark Kerkrade Zoo, the young female Sangha gave birth this morning. She was handraised herself and therefore introduced from Berlin Zoo to the social Gaiapark group to learn the ropes from the experienced females there. Sofar she's showing that she did in fact learn how to raise a young gorilla, because she's caring for it very well.

It's still early days, and the sex is not known yet but so far so good. It is born on the same date as it's father Makula (20).

What we`ve been speculating for about 2 years has now been confirmed by DNA tests: Jambo`s first offspring in Apenheul, Mapasa (born in 2007) is not the infant of the female Mandji, but of the young female Kiwisa. It is not known wether Mandji took the baby from Kiwisa or if Kiwisa didn`t care, leading to Mandji adopting him.

For those who don't know the story: back in 2007, Apenheul had 2 pregnant females - Kiwisa and Mandji. Kiwisa was due first, but it was Mandji who had a baby in her arms first. A few days later, Mandji gave birth to another baby - a stillborn male. It was beleived that she maybe she had been pregnant with twins born serveral days apart. However, Kiwisa never gave birth, but lost her belly and tested negative in following pregnancy tests, leading to speculations that Mapasa might have been from Kiwisa with Mandji adopting him right after the birth. Now that has been confirmed.

It was that fact which always made me believe the baby was really Kisiwa's. Its good they have now been able to make a positive identity.

Also, unless they witnessed the birth, I think it possible Mandji's own baby was born alive, but because she was already occupied with the stolen baby, she may have neglected to clean it properly so it was dead on discovery and so believed to be stillborn. Just my guess.;)

Thanks jwer

Im just gonna ask questions :D

Youngster born at Budapest this year to Golo&N'Yaounda [name&sex]??

London's new male 'Yeboah' has finally been 'unveiled' to the press etc. Photos and video show him out with all three females in the Gorilla Kingdom. Although 13 years old he is still blackbacked, but has apparently been mating two of the females.

Young male 'Matadi (7 years old) from Twycross has now been transferred to join Paignton's male group.

Death of old female Kati at Basel Zoo.

Basel Zoo have announced on their website the recent death of the female Gorilla Kati. Apparently her health had been deteriorating for some time. Announcement dated 22.3.10 but date and location of death uncertain(last Saturday? - in the ape house or temporary quarters?) .

Kati was 49 years old, having been obtained by Basel in 1962 originally as a partner for their 2nd zoo born 'Jambo' Unfortunately her only two offspring did not survive and she leaves no descendants in the Basel group. Her death leaves zooborn Goma(50) as the only really old animal in their group.

Any further background information on this would be appreciated.

The baby gorilla at Gaiapark Kerkrade is a boy and named Mosi, which means first born in Swahili. It is the first baby of mother Sangha.

Funny, first baby in Prague (in 2004) was named Moja (meaning One). They continued naming newborn gorillas this way since (they skipped No.2 for stillborn).

4 blackbacks from Port Lympne (Djala´s sons Jaja, Dishi, Kouni and MPasa) have been moved to La Bossiere du Dore in France. That zoo had previousley held an all-male-group from the EEP, but after a young handraised male from the Stuttgart nursery died and a second one was moved back to Stuttgart more dead then alive, the last 2 remaining males have been distributed to Wuppertal and London. It seems the zoo has now done a deal with Aspinall.. I wonder if some of the 4 will be allowed to join EEP groups in the next years, they are genetically interesting as they are offsprings of the wildborn "Djala" who has no relatives outside Howletts/ Port Lympne.

Very interesting news. I had assumed the transfer of the five Silverback/older males from Port Lympne to Rhenen(?) later this year was to make room for just these younger males. Evidently not, though there are several others at Howletts too which will probably use the freed-up space when the big males go.

I wonder if this move was EEP approved (or not), given the recent previous history of Gorillas at La Boissiere?

From Basel to Spain

From a Spanish thread; 11 year old Wima and her daughter Chelewa(4) have been transferred from Basel to Cabarceno, Spain, who already have 1.1 Gorillas.(Niky and Nadia from Madrid) and possibly others?

'Wima' is the daughter of Basel's current silverback, probably the reason for the move.
