Dierenpark Emmen (Closed) Emmen Zoo news

There are plans to keep him there, but separated from the rest of the herd. And the herd reallys isn't falling apart, as unt bwe already stated, the core of the group stays intact. The death of swe san thay is a tragedy, but these things also happen in nature. But let's hope that there will be al lot of calfs in coming years.

Thanks, the younger females Damini and Chandrika have been bred by Raja perhaps Yu Zin could help teach them about how to care for their calves.

oh sorry, I meqant when we do find out their pregnant, I've read somewhere there is a high chance they are but I can't confirm anything.

Experienced elephant-mother Htoo Kin Aye has put her sixth calf onto the world. Last night she gave birth to yet another young male. It's the 21st elephant birth at Emmen, and male number 17... Father, who else, Radza.

@elandantiloop, we don't count calfs who aren't actually born;) 21 have been born, 19 stayed alive. And before kaing lwin htoo moved to cologne, she mated with radza, and got pregnant, and gave birth to.... a female! There's some irony in that, don't you think?

Last sunday I saw there is still an elephant pregnant, I don't know when she is scheduled to give birth, my guess is next year...

And emmen anounced the dry moat surrounding the enclorue will disappear. It's meant to have the same effect as the ditch around the savannah, and big bushes and trees which are now out of reach of the elephants will be protected with electrical wires. The zoo has already stated that this has nothing to do with the annabel incident last year, but is meant to enlarge the exhibit. Emmen is now looking for means to finance the operation.

There are only two elephants who can be (visibly) pregnant at the moment. That are Htoo Yin Aye and Ma Palai. I'm wondering wich one it is.

It is very difficult or impossible to detect an elephant pregnancy by looking at the elephant. Most elephants have a big belly and visitors diagnose pregnancies in old females all the time!

Johnny, do you have any confirmation by the staff? Otherwise I am curious why you think that you can see if an elephant is pregnant, I tend to believe it`s wishful thinking.

No, I don't have any confirmation, but I tend to be right when it comes to pregnant elephants. Besides, I'm visiting Emmen the biggset part of my life, and I've seen a lot of elephant pregnancies, and I can quite tell a pregnancy and a big belly apart;p

Without exagerating, the chances of me being right about this are 90%.

She has a trunk, four legs and a tail;) Seriously, I don't know. I never learned to how to recognize the individual animals, maybe it sounds strange, but I have never taken any interest in that. Radza is very recognizable off course, and I knew which one was annabel. I find it much more interesting just watching the animals, and especially the very playful youngsters. However, that doesn't influence the fact I can see whether an elephant is probably pregnant or not.

Johnny, on www.olifantenhuis.com are photo's of both animals, can't you tell wich one it is with those photo's ?

Ma Palai has little trunks.
Htoo YIn Aye doesn't + her left ear is a little bit (naar buiten gevouwen) --> i don't know how to say that in english.

Sorry, I didn't pay that much attention to her. I find it more important to see there's another one pregnant, and that nr 22 is underway ( that's a little bit of pride for my hometown zoo;)). The word you are looking for is outward folded ear.

The calf has received a name today; Einga-Tha, which is burmees for 'boy on tuesday'.

Here's a link with a video about it's first day outside. It is in dutch, but the images are also nice to watch without knowing what is being said.
