Wildheart Animal Sanctuary Introducing Casper

Dont think this has ben mentioned yet?

In January the Isle of Wight Zoo made history when a rare white lion arrived and laid his first tracks down on Island ground. Travelling from his home at West Midlands Safari Park, three and a half year old Casper was secretly transported across the Solent by Red Funnel. For a while it was touch and go whether he would be able to travel on the scheduled day, which coincided with the heavy snow. Fortunately the motorways were clear and the journey went smoothly.

During the closed winter season, the big cat team have been quietly settling Casper into one of the zoo’s naturalistic enclosures. He has been enjoying the chance to climb onto the high rock and survey his new territory. For the time being his feline company is in the form of sibling tigers, Diamond and Aysha, living in a nearby enclosure but by Easter the zoo hope to bring Casper a belated Valentine gift in the form of a female white lion.

White lions are not albinos, but carry a combination of genes that cause them to release less pigment than a normal tawny lion. When he was born Casper would have been snow white, as he has matured he has adopted a pale sandy colour. Another striking difference from the normal coloured lions is that they have glacial green or icy blue eyes.

The Isle of Wight Zoo is now one of only three wildlife centres in the UK where white lions can been seen. There are literally a tiny handful of these unusual animals existing worldwide both in human care and in African reserves where breeding and re-introduction programmes are in operation.
The zoo team are looking forward to introducing Islanders to their newest resident and hope that everyone will brave the cold, wrap up warm and make tracks to welcome Casper during the half-term week!

He was one of the first white lions born at WMSP, and I'm sure there where reports a year or so ago that he had to be split up from the main pride as he was competing for top lion in the pride with his dad.

I hope Isle of Wight aren't planning on breeding from him.

IOW don't breed from their cats anymore, it purely acts as a sanctuary and retirement home.

I know they don't breed their cats, but its just the introduction they give of him and on their website how there are "a handful of white lions in human care and african reserves where breeding and reintroduction programmes are in operation" and the fact they are getting him a female by Easter makes me think otherwise...

Where are they 'reintroducing' white lions? I was under the impression that they only ever existed in a single very small population and were a mutation that had a rather negative impact on survival?
Wouldn't reintroduction cause massive issues in the health and wellbeing of any pride they managed to join?

A few white lions have been 'reintroduced' to the Greater Timbavati region of South Africa. The project is being overseen by the Global White Lion Protection Trust. I remember seeing the first two releases on TV a couple of years ago, but apparently there's now a full pride of white lions hunting together in the region without any noticeable disadvantages (compared to 'tawny' lions). I'm not sure what the exact idea behind this is (the website mentions restoring a natural balance) but it seems as though the white lions are not expected to join any pre-existing tawny pride.
More details are on their website:

According to their site, they do want the white lions to interact and breed with tawny lions.

19. Will the White Lions in your project ever be in contact with other lions?
Yes they will. The Trust's ultimate goal is to once again integrate wild-born White Lions into the lion population within their natural distribution range. In this way the natural dynamics of their endemic region will be restored. Also, if successful, this will help validate the 'meta-population management' approach for lions in South Africa. The founder White Lion pride already interacts with other tawny lions at the electrified boundary fences between the primary reintroduction area and the neighbouring private nature reserves, showing natural territorial behaviour. The next step in the carefully phased long-term Reintroduction Programme is to bond the White Lions with two wild tawny females from the region. These wild females have been specifically identified as they originate from the Greater Timbavati region and will, therefore, not disturb the existing natural pride structures. At every stage, our procedure is to support the processes of nature and not to disturb them

They state that there is no evidence for genetic or survival weaknesses, yet they don't seem to have any evidence that these animals are genetically sound either. Their lack of research is concerning.

Where is he being kept in the zoo? I know they refurbished the Lion enclosure a few years back but thats currently occupied by Charlie and Snoopy as far as I know.

As far as I know, the Paradise and West Mids Lions are not directly related as there has been no breeding between however I do not know if they came from the same place in South Africa if they have they could be cousins etc.
But no breeding has taken place between the two collections swapping cats.

They are not related as the both came from different sources.

I was speaking to one of the keepers, they said they did have a girlfriend for casper, but she was no longer arriving.
