Hi ZooPro,
I am only asking this as I am curious. Does DEWHA ask for ARAZPA's advice on imports like this?
The Zoo and Aquarium Association has minimal input, and no jurisdiction into what private zoos can or can't keep.
It does however manage the regional orang-utan program, and therefore apart from extremely exceptional cases, would not send animals from the regional program to non-Assocaiation institutions (whether they are private or not is irrelevant - e.g. Australia Zoo and Cairns Wildlife Safari reserve are private and are involved in a large number of regional program species).
And as stated elsewhere in this thread, Bornean orangs are being managed out of the regional program, in favour of Sumatrans. Again though, if some non-Association member applied to import, and was granted permits by DEWHA, then there's nothing stopping them from importing.
