Whale in captivity in the UK

It was rescued from the farralon islands, it's a baby pilot whale. It died shortly after being put in captivity...not suprising looking at the tank or the way they seem to be looking at it as if to say ""what the hell do we do now???" :P
 
I saw this clip a while ago.

I am fairly certain that the WMZ never had a dolphinarium. Robert Jackson was, however, very much involved with Morecambe Marineland in its early days though I think Morecambe's pool was square.

I originally thought that this could have been one of the young Belugas that were briefly at Cleethorpes Zoo but its is clearly a Pilot Whale.

there are two bottle nosed dolphins in the background in the video. I am not sure if the baby pilot whale is the one mentioned in the article as it states it is a very handsom specimen. Id say if it had of been so young they would have mentioned the fact.
 
It is a young pilot whale? Pilot whales grow pretty big...see Bubbles or Shadow at Sea World San Diego? The Farralon Islands slaughter them in the hundreds each year, so I'm guessing they rescued a baby from being killed.
 
i think this is flamingo land, it looks very much like the small hour glass shaped original dolphin pool there. Im also almost certain that welsh mountain never had dolphins or a whale!
 
Just found this thread. The video clip is of Winnie and the whale is in the old Dolphin House (not the newer Ocean World) at Flamingo Park Zoo. I found a newspaper article which is dated Aug 10th 1966 and it says it flew to FPZ from the Faroe islands.

Winnie was a Killer whale, no?

To whoever said it was morecambe, as you said, they had two square pools.

Could be Cleethorpes Marineland, but presumably it is the Welsh Mountain Zoo. Wales did have a couple of dolphinariums.


Also doesn't look like Rhyl's Pool. (I don't think it was open very long either so it is unlikely they had different ones.)http://defunctmarinemammalparks.webs.com/welshdolphinaria.htm

Robert Jackson in partnership with George Cansdale – former Superintendent at ZSL set-up Marineland with a company called Marineland Ltd and opened in 1964. They had financial difficulties and were taken over by Morecambe Council a year or so later. Whilst Jackson went on to operate the Welsh Mountain Zoo, Cansdale opened Natureland Marine Zoo on Skegness sea-front which is still open to this day.

Can't make out whether it's long or short finned, but definitely not an Orca. And was it really Winnie there? I don't think she ever went to Flamingo Park Zoo.

Winnie.. the one shown in the video clip looks like a pilot whale and isn't the same Winnie as the Killer Whale that was at Windsor.. if that helps.
