any news of any other Okapi arrivals, as they saying that another male would be joining the collection?

It would be fantastic, if they can get the okapi breeding so early. And would state the demand for the additional okapi housing proposal to become reality.

The rodent in with the Pouched Rat and Dormice is Tanzanian Grass Rat and they have been in theur fir nearly 4 months now.

According to Z (the zoo's publication), there is now Mount Kulal Spiny Mouse in the Secret World of The Okapi. They are the only ones in the UK.

According to the magazine, it says:

"The animals were discovered on an isolated lava desert high on the mountain and may well be completely restricted to this unique habitat."

Apparently they have already bred a couple of times since arriving at the zoo.

I'm quite sure they have. There'll probably be gazillions of the little buggers before long. :D

Just for clarity: The Mount Kulals have been on show for a while, in the leftmost of the two small rodent enclosures in the Okapi house. The righthand one contains the Four-striped Grass Mice, which are possibly of the rarer Mesic species rather than the relatively common Xeric. The large enclosure in the corner has the African dormice, Emin's Pouched Rat and Tanzanian Grass Rats.

I think they're fantastic - a very interesting selection of small rodents.

Work has started on building the new bridge, part of the ramp over the cannel has been started alongside the Lion enclosure its going to look a bit like the ramp up to Realm of the Red Ape so it should be intresting to see how it works,no other building has been started yet,the only other thing i noticed is that R of R.A has gained a FREE FLYING Grosbeak Starling!!!!!!!!!!!

she died two weeks ago but im not sure if it was common knowledge
also one of the sealions died today but again not sure if this is common knowledge just yet

That's sad news about the sealion. Which one was it? Now that there are only 2 sealions left, is there plans to get more?

Oh and when do the Phillipine Crocs go on display?

According to the Liverpool Daily Post visitors to Chester Zoo can see polar bears, the information is a year or two out of date. I wonder how many poeple will go and expect to see them.

’Tis the season to be jolly - Liverpool Daily Post.co.uk

Crickey- that's a bit of a faux pas- you'd think they'd check before putting something like that in print...

Incidentally -I reckon the title of this thread ought to be changed from 'Big news' to just 'news'.

A happy xmas to you Rob...
