(the green is the former surface of the island. The blueish/purple line is the new wall. The 2 arrows at the top that point into the enclosure is where bokito escaped. Thats where the lookout point is. Now there is a window over there)

The cunstruction of the new giraffehouse is going really quick now:

It can been seen throughout a large part of the zoo because it is extremly high.

Looks cool  Can you tell us anything about how it's going to look when it's finished? Possiby find a drawing or picture of the model of it?

That may be the weirdest looking giraffe house i have seen ;). But also pretty cool

Migratory bird aviary is absolute top!!!

In summer there were Ruffs displaying. You could see all the breeding system 100% well formed, with "black" or dominant male and "white" or sattelite male, going through all postures and movements to dominate him. Amazing. I seen lots of wild Ruffs, but never that in the wild.

Can't wait to see polar bear area - it looks so HUGE. 8-)

Can anybody tell me where exactly the new giraffe house is positioned? And how much space it covers? I have a map from Blijdorp from 2006, so if you can tell me which exhibits are currently a construction site, that would help a lot.

is there an uptodate map of the zoo on their website have searched, can't find it and my dutch is a little rusty..................as in non-existant!

De red circle is the Giraffe-house.

The Kangaroo's are going away and a small piece of that land is for the giraffe also, but how large the outdours becomes, i don't now.

Thanks. What does the other construction icon to the right of the bisons indicate?

That construction is already finish.
It is now a place where the bird show is given during the summer season.
There is also a building for those birds.

Next year, i'm going to Netherlands to see some zoos. I'm gonna visit Artis, Blijdorp, Emmen Zoo, Safari Beekse Bergen and Burgers Zoo. Andn i'm gonna bypass Berlin on my way. Now you know...

Here a picture of the giraffehouse of yesterday:

The lower part on the left-side will become the visitors-eara.

Can you tell us anything speciel about this new giraffe house?

special.. well what is special.. i think most of what is known has already been told... The building will house the giraffegroup and probably also the mhorrgazelles. (the gazelles were gonna get there own miniature version of the building but the park was not allowed to build that so they will probably be house in the giraffehouse now).
At least the whole group of giraffes blijdorp has now will fit in (8 animals).
A friend of mine did some math and he thinks the whole building will be around 15 meters high. You already know the location. The visitorarea of the giraffehouse will be near the exit of the future savannahouse (the house with the crocs, hyraxes, etc.) The outside enclosure will have a border at a waterhole where the enclosure of the greater kudus, and the enclosure of the zebra + ostrich meet. Eventually the enclosures are supposed to look like it is 1 enclosure because of the natural borders between them. This whole area is gonna change in the comming years with new enclosures and additions (but not everything about those projects is clear yet).

Blijdorp anounced some changes for the comming year.
The kangaroos that are still left will move to the old pudu-enclosure (the pudus got a new enclosure in the last year). The kangaroos will have to make way for africa (giraffes, servals etc).
After the giraffes have moved to the new place the old enclosure (former elefantpaddock will be temporarily used for indian rhinos. Currently blijdorp has 0,2 rhinos. Mother Namaste and dauhter Sophie. Sophie and a new male will be kept at the giraffe-enclosure, while Namaste gives birth to a new calf (she is pregnant). After that the rhino enclosure in the asian part of the zoo will be rebuild. (i'm not sure how, but there where planns a while ago to keep 1,2 adults with jung. Now there is room for 1,1 with jung. There were discussions of making a new stable under the takin-mountain. But we'll have to wait and see what becomes of it).
About the takins. New animals will arrive from shanghai! I don't know the genders or the number, but the male that is left in blijdorp will stay. (blijdorp holds Sechuantakin)
It was also said that the chinese golden snubnosedmonkeys in shanghai are ready to leave, but beijing will not approve the move so far. Personaly i don't see that changing very soon...
On the site of the bison, beavers and muskoxen will be held.
Seaotter male Chuluugi who is now in antwerpen will come back to blijdorp in a new attempt to mate with the females micas & mare. Chuluugi is handraised and doesn't seem to know how to do it... If the next attempts fail blijdorp will try artifical insemination.

The first stage of the "actica" is planned to open the first of april (thats only the enclosure for the female polarbear). The rest of arctica should be ready by summer.
The savannahouse should also be done by the first of april. The giraffehouse a little later
The aviaries for macaws/ibisses etc by spring
Colobusmonkeys / servals by spring

so for those of you planning to come over, i would say come after spring and hope the constuctions are not delaid ;)

Great info Trebaruna! Thanks a lot :)

I will be visiting Blijdorp this summer, most likely somewhere between the midst of July and the start of August. Keeping my fingers crossed that they will have everything ready by then :D

But then again, Blijdorp is a zoo, and the word "zoo" has always been a contrary to whatever word means "completed at the promised time" ;)

It sounds really exciting about the chinese golden snubnosed monkeys and sea otters. What species of kangaroo are left? I think i remember seeing red, wester grey and parma in 2006?

The greys left, and parma were never there ;) They still have Red and agile? (Macropus rufus and Macropus agilis). In a small zoo in the netherlands (dierenpark wissel in Epe) is making an enclosure where they will keep agilis, so i think eventually the blijdorp group of agilis will move there. But for now blijdorp has 2 species left.
