They are very aggressive animals (the males). While I welcomed their return to the UK I was a bit surprised they were being imported to collections which presumably(?) intended them as mixed exhibits.

I also think they would have done better as a single group of 4, rather than as pairs.

I'm sure that the zoo in which they came from keeps them as a mixed exhibit i might be wrong tho

yes you are right they can be very nasty animals. hopefully Marwell can breed them and build up a bigger herd and show them off in a nice big open paddock

I don't think the original ones at Marwell were mixed with other species- or if they were(?), it wasn't successful. The best option is probably a small group in their own paddock with e.g. birds or something they won't bother with.

Notes from today, very sunny and ipso-facto very busy, but a good visit!

- All of the animals in the paddocks today, except the gemsbok and giraffes
- As before, the netting is still off the weaverbird site for some reason. :/
- There was a wedding going on at the Hall today, and Suki and Juba the off-show cheetahs watched it all without been seen from the top of their hut.
- Speaking to a keeper, I found at the work going on in the Wild Ass Stallion Paddock is not just re-fencing... nor is it a new enclosure, unfourtunately. The 'spare' stallion has gone to a European Zoo to breed, and his old paddock will be converted into a permenant wedding marquee.
- I asked the same keeper about the wildebeest situation, and said they are planning to introduce them into the paddock in the Summer, but are aware of the problems their tempers can cause and are still negotiating whether to let the wildebeest out first, the zebra out first or build a divide. She also mentioned that while Rooney has the usual black wildebeest temperment, Oriana was hand-reared and when she goes up to the fence she just wants a tickle. :D
- The serval enclosure is making good progress, with the windows and safety barrier fitted. It looks like netting over the top will be the next stage.
- By far the most interesting sight of the day was nature at work when a duck with nine young had stupidly decided to swim around the otter pond. It looked like she might make it when the otters swam up to the bank without noticing, but the one behind caught sight of them in the corner of his eye, and swum slowly towards them. Then, in a flash it leapt out towards the nearest duckling, which it caught after a very short chase and carried it away to the shrubs in it's mouth. The mother was going crazy, but of course could do nothing as the otter kept swimming along and carrying it up the bank, the duckling still alive in it's jaws.
- Finally, World of Lemurs seems full of life again, with all the outdoor enclosures inhabited and the new poles up. The only empty bit is the old mouse lemur enclosure, which is devoid even of jumping rats.
- As expected, the new walk-through aviary in the old tamarin enclosure in Encounter Village is quiet at the mo with just Hammerkop, Little Egret and Madagascarn Teal in an aviary where little has been changed since it's previos incarnation. However, here's hoping when the planned new species arrive over time.
- Some move-arounds in Tropical World: Fregate Island Beetles in the old Green Tree Python vivarium, Green Tree Python in the old Fregate Island Beetle vivarium, and Boulenger's Horned-Headed Lizards in the old Beaded Lizard vivarium.
- The Gift Shop Cafe sells your basic drinks, cakes, biscuits, crisps etc., but is very nicely laid out.
- And once more I got the giraffe house to myself at the end of the day, stroking Tia and Kwame's muzzles too.

Awwh, that poor duck :( I am hopefully going to go tomorrow, but Im still confused about whether I can post stuff I find or not.

hopefully the other ducklings got out ok and that the mother wont take them there again then

No calves at the moment, but looking ready to drop soon. When I was there in Febuary, a keeper pointed the pregnant cow out and she looked very round then.

And according to the keeper the duck put her ducklings in the macaque pond that morning, only to move onto the the otters! She's officially the Deadly Duck of Doom. ;)

Sad to hear about the ducks Zambar, hope they can settle down in a safer pond!:D

Are weddings in Marwell (or any zoo) really popular? Never really thought about that idea before. Still if it is really popular, might as well make a permenant marquee and gain a good amount of money from it to help with other projects.

yes are we allowed to post are findings in this thread?

If it is updates about Marwell in general, this is the best place for it I think. I hope Zambar does not mind as he started this thread, but there's not much point in having several different update threads for one place.

As I said, I saw a wedding going on today, so I assume they're popular if they're spending money on something like that. Not sure whether I'd want mine in a busy zoo day though with hundreds of people walking past! :p

Yea was going to note that, they must be real zoo nutters, couldn't find an available church or just loved the scenery and animals:D

Obviously I love zoos but I don't think I'd have my wedding in one. Though that opinion could change over time....:p

Thanks very much for the clarification. :)

Unfortunatley so. :( Then again, they seem to cope well enough living next to a playground.

Lol, I feel sorry for the Przewalski Horses, having to put up with the noise all day. Are the camels back in this paddock yet? And also, when is it becoming the cheetah enclosure, and how is that going to work with the park where it is?
